I think i heard an interesting bit in one of the two videos about Hardware Raid is dead. I think it was mentioned that certain NVMe speeds are surpassing the Bus speed of PCI-E. If this is the case, what is the best way to connect NVMe drives to a computer to gain the fastest speeds.
There is no thing faster than the bus. The message of the video is that old standards like putting storage on dedicated controllers, offload work to them and make this hardware the basis for all storage, is outdated.
Your PCIe bus is the fastest (well, outside of the bus connecting DRAM to the CPU) you will get. So use PCIe and you’re fine. No need for dedicated controllers as both NAND and CPU speak PCI Express.
It’s been a hot minute since I watched those videos but IIRC he was talking about NVMe drives in RAID, which yeah when they are all accessed at the same time can exceed the total PCIe bandwidth.
It’s not like you can really do much about it though soooooo yeah.
Only thing you need to watch out for is whether the slot you’re plugging the drive into is directly connected to the CPU or if it’s going through the PCH (Chipset). Consult your motherboard manual for that info.
