Hey there. So with my most recent build i am using an old portable storage drive as my main.
My problem is that every now and then my hard drive will turn itself off (usually when the computer is left unattended). This usually causes me comming back to my computer with a blue screen with it stuck on initializing disk for crash dump or comming back to windows where i cannot do anything. The hard drive im using is a seagate momentus... ST9750422AS ATA
I have searched for a fix to this problem before but havent found one yet. I do however have the drive operating vertically instead of horizontally like how is was designed to run. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this type of problem or if anyone knows of a fix or if my stupidity of using this drive in this way has anything to do with the problem.
In your windows power saving settings there should be a option to change the harddrive shutoff time to never.
but it also could be a faulty drive.
Hope it helped!
I already checked this out earlier and its already been set to never by default
I'd check for Firmware updates. Something else I would do is check if the problem occures on Linux. This usually helps me determine if it's software or hardware.
Well everything seems to be up to date. I dont have any copy of linux and im not really interested in installing another os unill i build another computer or purchase a ssd. I would also like to mention that this problem only occoures when the computer is left at idle and usually takes a little while to happen. (aound 15-30 mins)
make sure there are no power management settings in the bios, and make sure that you got all the latest drivers for your motherboard, most specifically RAID drivers. Can always run a disk check on it, look for bad sectors, if there are none, then I highly doubt its the hard drive.
are the raid drivers necessary?
the hard drive isnt set to run in a raid and its the only drive in the computer.
ive had a good look around the power settings in the bios and in windows and there wasnt too much that looked to be out of place anywhere. Ive downloaded the raid drivers and will await to see if the problem continues to occour. Scans also came back clean
Im tempted to just wait till i purchase an ssd or new hard drive to install my os
