Hard drive for backup and torrent seeding

I recently came to the realization that the external hard drive that im using is one of those seagate barracuda 3tb drives with the ~43% failure rate. and Im hoping to get a new one before this one fails on me.
What are some good hard drives for reliability? im mainly looking for storage space and reliability over speed. since this will be a drive used for file back and seeding torrents. (legal ofcourse)

im looking for a drive in the 3-4 tb range.

Are western ditigal green drives good? ive heard they fail sooner because they turn off and have to spin up again if they dont have any activity on them for little bit.

Aside from avoiding seagate im pretty much open to any drive as long as its going to be reliable for a decent amount of time. 3-4 years of faily constant use.

personally ive never had any issues with my 2 TB western digital green drive that i ripped out of its enclosure i have been using it for nearly 4 years now.. i have sea gate, western digital and Samsung in my rig for storage mediums. all three run well and so far do well in the reliability department.

personal opinion 3 TB and more hdd storage drives are not for the average joe yet. until even the basic 3TB hdd is of our current 3TB NAS quality and reliability. disclaimer i dont put my drives through hell on a daily basis nor do i keep a regular backup.( i live on the edge i know)

Torrent seeding? So, 24/7 use? HGST Deskstar
I have one for my video files and love it. Can't say anything about the longevity for myself (only bought it in Feb) but the reviews were all good and it has a 3y warranty.

yeah 24/7 runtime, maybe not constantly but fairly constantly.
How will one of the hgst's compare to a western digital green? seeing as its twice the price. And does this being a nas drive mean anything if im going to just be using the single drive in an external enclosure?

and 1 millon hour mean time between failure? what the hell does that mean? ther is no way this thing could last 114 years,
on newegg the 4tb one looks to be the best deal.
this is the one im looking at

I have the 3TB model, but Barnacules Nerdgasm has 4 of the 4TB models in his NAS.

I wouldn't read too much into the MTBF number. It's a statistic and seems to be exaggerated http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=6404

But HGST has a reputation for making reliable drives (unlike Seagate, although experiences may differ).

I have 3 WD red drives, the 1TB and 2x2TB ones, have had 0 issues with them 24/7 server and nas usage for almost 2.5 years, the larger red drives do seem to have some issues however. specially the 6TB one.

Don't know much about HDDs but I do know that WD has a purple that is supposedly 24/7... I know that Logan and Wendell recently talked about some hard drives that they believe are good for reliable (24/7?) use. It was a brand I have never heard of, but those can sometimes be the best (or worst). But considering it is coming from them I assume it is a good HDD. I think they all range from 3-5TB
EDIT: Warrenties are a good thing to look at to see how long the manufacturer at least expects it to last, and if it is a 24/7 drive then expect it to last at least the warranty in 24/7 use

Do you know which video they talked about it in? I would like to hear what they have to say about them.
im currently leaning towards one of the hgst drives.

Also thinking possibly about a WD green drive because they (advertised at least) have good reliability and whatnot. But at the same time I remember seeing on possbly a teksyndicate video or maybe something else like linus tech tips that the western digital green drives weren't actually that good because their power saving mode which turns the drive off during down time causes excess wear and tear from it having to spin back up every time it gets activity requests. I think the shut off time is something in the 7 to 15 minute range.

Can anyone confirm or refute if the green drives are actually good for something like this? Im thinking of getting the hgst because of the supposed high reliability but would like to spend a little less than that. Ill also have to check into the WD purple.

I have no idea what video, my guess is a Tek video. I thought the green was advertised as efficient and the purple advertised as 24/7 use. HGST seems like a good bet, unless you hear something bad, then I'd look into it more. Either way I assume you would be happy with either the WD purple or an HGST.

I often use Western Digital. Never had any problems. Looking at using their WD Black drives in the near future! I'm also thinking about HGST drives which I understand are pretty darn good! :O)

'Ey man, I was randomly looking around and found a table "from WD". http://www.amazon.com/Blue-SATA-7200rpm-Internal-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=pd_sim_pc_16?ie=UTF8&refRID=1R06NJKYPJWPKQ1NZXCF
Scroll down a bit and you will be able to find a chart saying what drives do what.
