I have a file server that has 3 HDDs in it. One is an 80GB boot (I bought a bunch of these refurbished from Canada Computers for $15) running Windows Server 2012 R2 standard or essentials, can't remember which I installed, 3tb Seagate, and a 1tb WD Black.
I occasionally hear a strange ticking that makes me think the drive is re-initializing itself or something, either way it doesn't sound normal. Problem is, I don't know what is wrong, which drive it is, and how to test it. I ran the basic Windows tests found in the tools section of the properties menu and it didn't find anything. Is there any free software I can use to see whats up? I'd prefer no shareware. Thanks!
I had a drive make a click sound once too. Shut down system since wasn't being used much. Drive never started again. Use a SMART tool to get some info about it but back that shit up fast
Check the firmware on the 3TB Seagate drives and see if it's CC4B. Apparently Seagate fixed it with the CC4H. Seagate's infamous "chirping" noise has plagued their drives since the 7200.10 series was released.
If it doesn't fix it, I would RMA the drive. The chirping action causes excessive wear on the heads and platters.
I'll definitely check it out. What would be the easiest way to check and update the firmware? I've got another 2TB Seagate hard drive in another system I will check as well. It was always bad for being really loud when spinning up.
