I jsut brought the half life 2 series and the only game that doesnt work is hl2 i run it and it loads to the opening loading screen and then it goes black and goes back to desktop!!!!!

anyway, assuming youre running a 64 bit os and trying to run it in 64bit mode... it doesnt work, you need to disable it

Select My Games Tab
Highlight HL2
Right click and select properties
Click Set Launch Options button
In the Box enter -32bit

Um yea ae it never really compelled me to buy it untill my mate told me to download the Demo and i fell in love hahaha, um i had to format nothing worked.....
