So in light of @wendell's latest video on the upgraded Mac pro, as well as a few of the upper echelon of youtubers moving to Final Cut Pro i'm curious about getting a Mac. Only I don't want to give Apple money (partially because I have none, partially because I very much agree with Tek Syndicate's stance on Apple). Mac Pros, even the 2009 models that wendell suggested in his video will run about 1500 dollars minimum (900USD~) in my local currency. As such i'm looking at a hackintosh build with my current X99- 5820k system for video editing. My primary concern is redundancy when it comes to data and the files that i'm working on as well as the performance gains in terms of workflow and reduced render times with Final Cut.
Just wondering what you guys think of Hackintosh, and for those that have tried, care to share your experience? How did you find it, installation process ok? Was it stable? Did you dual boot or have a dedicated machine and so on.
I found it a complete PITA and would not recommend it as your main system. The biggest challenge was that once you get everything up and running an OSX update could screw it all up again.
If you just want to see if you can OSX running for the sake of it, and to have a play around you might be better to do it inside a VM, else my recommendation is to build something like the MacPro or get a 2nd hand Mac Mini.
Did it once with a laptop and Niresh. There was a specific install script to my specific hardware and anything else would not work.
OSX is just shitty BSD that has a console gamer's set of rules.
Jailbreaking my ass.
Do what wendell did in his video and you will have less hassle. Hackintosh is not worth any of the time spent and for some reason its illegal (that is the stupidest shit I have ever heard).
Wise words. I've done some hunting and a lot of research and people have said similar. Apparently Z79 is a lot more compatible but there are some issues with hackintosh X99 systems. It's doable, but it's not recommended as a main "livelihood" rig. I'm on the hunt for an older mac pro at the moment - So expensive though, mac pros are around 1500~ (1000USD) where I am atm.
