i wanted to know if i should get the EVGA gtx 780 superclocked or the amd r9 290x?
benchmark wise, overclock wise, and just overall performance. they are the same price right now so i would love any help i can get. thanks!!!

Get the GTX 780 its now cheaper than the 290x its cooler it makes less niose it uses less power and its faster when overclocked.
You shouldn't consider the R9 in its current state. The 780 overclocks further, and out performs the R9. This is because of the thermal limitations of the R9, with the reference cooling design.
+1 It's good to see AMD stand up for consumers. It's a shame I have to recommend a 780 now.
should i consider remakes of the r9 when they come out? or jump on the 780 sale right away?
The third party coolers might make the R9 a totally different card. It really depends if you want to wait until the end of the year to see the difference. The 780ti is going to be launched alongside those third party coolers. Could provide a little more competitive pricing.
What's with everyone recommending the 780 over the r9 290x now?
The 290x is clearly a faster card for 1440p and 4K gaming. Also when Mantle is released next month Nvidia cards will be behind in performance until next generation.
+1 and with the aftermarket coolers, there is a possibility that it becomes the next "Titan".
I agree. I should have qualified my statement: 780 over a Reference 290x now.
With coolers that can give ~10% temp improvement, that means an even higher overclock nearing +10%. I would be scarred if I was NVidia. Here is the 270x with a reference cooler. Now here is a 270x with a non-reference cooler. You see there is a 10% decrease in temps. With the 290x that could mean a 10% increase in clocks and performance.
Yesterday the 290x was the way to go. Now the 780 is the way to go. Most likely, when non-reference 290x's come, they will be the way to go.
"The faster card". No.
Nvidia has its own low level APIs. So far, only BF4 will have support for Mantle.
The R9 has a pretty aggressive overclock out of the box, and it is already hitting its thermal limits. The card operates at 95 degrees, and after extended periods of gaming it takes a 30% performance penalty. See the Techpowerup reviews for reference.
Anyway, the 780 overclocks beyond the R9, is quieter, is cooler, looks better, and it is now a very similar price.
There's absolutely no reason why anyone should buy an R9. You're right in saying that it is the next Titan, because the Titan is also a ridiculous card that nobody should buy.
Hopefully the third party coolers can get it under control. but clearly, the 780 is the winner at this time.
Here are the OC benchmark results:

Never rely on benchmarks with stock clocks. They never tells you the whole story.
Honestly, we don't have the "whole story" until the 780Ti and non-reference 290x come out.
"But clearly, the 780 is the winner at this time." I agree 100%, I mean, look at that price! $510 for a 780... NVidia was ripping their customers off big time (well, AMD did not have anything to compete). This is why I say AMD is pro-consumer.
Where do you live? Winter is coming, I used to heat my house with a 8800gt. I'd say wait 2 months if you can, the numbers are going to get interesting fast.
I agree. AMD is the better company, and they had a working forumla. But the massive price cuts have completely undermined them. It is a shame.
I just don't understand why they made the R9 a reference locked launch.
Ha! I often joke that people can add kitchen accessories to their checkout when they purchase such a card. Use it to cook some snacks while you game. A massive chicken rotisserie inside your chassis.
I've got news for AMD fanboys around here, I've looked into the crystal ball and guess what... Nvidia is still boss. Sorry. :(
I was hoping to see a better outcome but it's just not in the cards (no pun intended)
here is my reasoning,
1: the 290x comes out already "overclocked" and can raise or lower it's clock dynamically. It can't handle the heat of it's higher clock settings, most likely something to do with power managment.
2: a third party cooler would lower the temp a bit, but the issue is deeper, in the design. They'd need to replace key components to make an impact.
3: nvidia has it's own "mantle" like solution on its way so I wonder how that's gonna pan out.
4: 780ti !!! Let's see how this one turns out.
Final thoughts, the 780 is a tried and true card with great performance and overclocking, it's stock performance is neck and neck with the 290 except the 780 runs cooler and uses less power. The little difference a 290 will gain you on some games isn't worth the headache of overheating and noise levels.
If my prediction is wrong I give you permission to tar and feather me. I've read allot on this over the past weekend and these are my opinions.
There is no such thing as a better company or a pro-consumer company. They are all responsible to maximize profits for their investors. If cheaper prices for a cheaper product makes you feel warm and fuzzy, you have fallen for their marketing or the price point. The only thing that is pro-consumer is vigorous competition.
I do understand externalities. No company has a clean record. Take it as my opinion, with regards to my AMD statement. I don't use anything that's AMD at this time. I just think they have the better company image.
I wasn't kidding, was a great card for the time, but HOT, 290x hot...
Additionally, the only cards we've seen have been sent to reviewers which get the cream of the crop to do their reviews. Will an average card boil water?
I'm still really excited to see if the third party coolers can handle the R9. All credit to the third parties if they can.
The R9 has 1000mhz clock I would hardly call that an aggressive overclock.
Again for 1440p and 4k gaming the R9 is the clear winner:

Fair enough on Linus' overclocking results, I wouldn't just rely on one observation on that though.
AMD announced at their GPU event a number of games that will be using Mantle including BF4. Even if this gives a modest improvement of around 10%, it will be ahead of the 780ti
*thank's for the correction "the faster gpu"
