GTX 770 4gb 1440p performance

I have an EVGA SC 4gb GTX 770 and only have a 1050p monitor right now. I was thinking about upgrading to a 1440p monitor. Will I take a big performance hit? What kind of settings would I need to use to get a smooth 60fps on 1440p?

This is exactly the config I ran until the wake of the bitcoin mining bubble meant that I found a deal on an in-warranty 290X for next to nothing. 1440p on some games was a bit sketchy because they were designed for 1080p, however most games worked just fine at 1400p. I couldn't give you any specifics -- I think I remember that bioshock choked a bit when everything was maxed out at 1400p but I adjusted it down just a bit and visually I couldn't tell much of a difference and it ran fine. I did always enable vsync because I think things will dip down below 60fps in a lot of games.

So I don't have anything concrete to offer you (except maybe some of the games in past benchmarks we graphed at 1440p, and the 1440p monitor club videos from last year... but just FYI software improvements in video drivers mean that you might see as much as +10% performance improvement since last year. Certainly we see that in bioshock on both the 290X and the GTX 780. )  But my personal experience was that it was basically fine to go from 1080p > 1440p. Coming from 1680x1050 your performance might suffer a bit more, but a lot of games were (are?) optimized mainly for 1080p. Not to say you won't get a great experience at 1440p just that it's less than where it should be in some cases on some games.

Wendell

770 is pretty capable at 1440p. Put simply, playable frames at high/ultra presets.

There's a few members, on this forum, that use a 770 at 1440p. They're all pretty happy with their setup. Hope that gives you the confidence to buy.

I agree with Wendell, but I'd probably expect having to drop to high or medium, of course depdending on the game. You could always pick up a second 770 4GB for SLI and then play everything on max settings, aside from a few exceptions such as Crysis 3.

Edit: My comments were said about 60+ FPS. Of course if you're willing to have in the upper 30s to lower 50s you could probably play many games on ultra, but still have to keep some on high.

indeed.

the 770 should do fine on 1440p however you will probably have to turn down settings, to get a smoothly 60fps. on GPU bound games. especialy games like bioshock, Tombraider, Crysis 3.

Thats why i allways recommend a 290 over a 770 4GB, just because they allmost cost the same, but the 290 is much more powerfull

I did not knew that you had a 290x Wendell?

I have a gtx 770 i run 100/450 overclock and i can run any game on max settings with no problems

Literally have had the 290x like two weeks. Whenever the gigabyte box showed up in the background of the tek. Bitcoin miner liquidation for the win! lol.

I can't quite get it to 1100 though.. its pretty stable at 1080/5ghz memory clock.

still cool.

1080mhz is not that bad. But if its a Gigabyte, the Windforce runs a bit hot. So probably thats the reason why you cannot get it on 1100 stable.

The Sapphire tri X and the Vapor X run abit cooler.

Im personaly looking for a 290, and it will probably be one of the 2 Sapphire´s.

The sapphire is for sure the best cooler out. I fiddled with mine.. it's a bit loud (louder than you'd expect) but after replacing the thermal paste and carefully torquing the screws to have the same tension corner to corner it improved cooling on the card about 8-9 degrees C. I wonder if the problems reporting with the windforce cooler are down to assembly? Because there are a lot of hit-or-miss reports floating around for sure.

yes, i think its a problem according to assembly. The reason why the windforce is so loud is because it ramps up to 70% fan speed or so, to prevent it from throttling,

8/9 degrees is still a big improvement, for just reseating the cooler, so you could say that it was not assambled right.

But the strange thing is that not only the windforce suffer this issue, the Asus direct CU II, seem to have it aswell. seems like the heatsink contacting is not optimal.

Seems like that the sapphire coolers are much better then most others.

A 770 is totally fine for 1440p gaming. You will probably see quite the performance hit coming from a 1050p monitor, but you can play basically all new titles at high settings. I personally dropped the AA on games like BF4 to 2x msaa (or similar options that are available) and used high-ultra for the rest. Even if you have to turn down a few more settings for new titles in the next few years, playing at 1440p is just a huge visual improvement, not to mention that it has other benefits as well.
