GTX 690 to R9 290 Crossfire?

I've been using a GTX 690 to game at 1440p for most of the year. In general it's done very well, but I've been running into some framerate issues, namely Fallout: New Vegas (modded to hell and using an ENB) and Tomb Raider. The compromises to run them well aren't major, but I was just offered two vanilla R9 290s for $370. I'm pretty tempted, but I know I'll have to buy into an aftermarket cooler, which is going to raise the price $100 at least.

So the question is, do y'all think it's worth selling the 690 (should be able to get $450-500 for it) and swapping out for R9 290 crossfire? Or should I buy into newer gen hardware?

The GTX 970 which is about $300 if you can find it trades blows with the R9 290x.  Lets not forget that the 970 overclocks like a bat out of hell.

The 290s are great for price/performance but I would probably go with a more future proof 970 or maybe 2.

I think its definitly worth selling your 690 if you can get that kinda money for it.

He can get that kind of money ... cause it is the king of GPUs ... even if it is two GPUs duct taped together   lol

Running 970 SLI has been in the back of my head. The power consumption alone over the 290s feels worth it.

And much, much better performance on 1080p. On 1440p the 970 is pretty even with the 290x, but then at 4k the 290x beats it.

Kind of odd how poor nvidia cards are for high res gaming.
