GT 840M vs AMD?

So friend of mine is getting a new laptop for college, he doesn't game much but he wants a dedicated graphics card. I don't know a whole lot about the laptop side of things. He found an ACER laptop which fits his budget quite nicely.

Its an upgrade from his old one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231380

Its a decent upgrade and I am not the biggest fan of ACER but it fits his budget. What around this price say $750 max would be a good choice. I don't care if it is AMD or Nvidia GPU.

Thats not bad deal for the price. The 840m is by no means a super gpu, but it should run pretty much any game at least in 720p. 850m or 860m laptops dont really fit your budged except except you find a deal or a refurbished model somewhere. You mightbe able to get a 840m laptop with a better screen, but that would most likely have an i5 or less ram.

Oh, you could sell the hdd and replace it with a 256gb ssd by the way.

Yeah I thought about recommending that to him, he plays indie games, call of duty, and very rarely battlefield 4.

I would personally go down the AMD, MSI route. For one better price to performance. and secondly Acer products are nasty cheap. So many acer laptops die.

What would you recommend?

Honestly? Just take a look at the different models and decide for youself. There is very little separating each model and its all down to personal taste

Alright, I am very out of the loop when it comes to laptop hardware. XD
