I am currently running a GTX 770 2GB with an FX-8350. I want to upgrade my card, mostly because the 2GB VRAM appears to have become somewhat of a limitation. The horsepower of the GPU itself still seems sufficient. I only game at 1080P, and will be staying at that resolution for the foreseeable future. I have been eyeing 4GB cards such as the GTX 980. I want something (relatively) future proof, so that I don't have to upgrade for quite some time. Should I wait for Nvidia's next-gen cards, or maybe go with the Red Team (AMD?). I really don't have a preference, just want a good 4GB that can game at max settings at 1080P.
Wait until Polaris and Pascal come out then look for an R9 390 on sale.
yes
and wait for AMD's as well
A used R9 290 or R9 280X are both wonderful options for 1080p and can be had for between $130 and $250.
Waiting is an endless game, and being an early adopter of new tech can end poorly. We are 6+ months from a new release, and there's nothing stopping you from getting a decent performance increase now, and another in the near future.
Edit: I have to expand on this really quickly to just point out how little sense waiting makes.
Imagine you have an excruciating, jaw splitting toothache. Too harsh? Alright just a normal, take-two-tylenol-and-go-to-the-dentist toothache. You're at the dentist, with your throbbing, painful, barely sedated toothache, and the receptionist says to you,
"If you would like, the doctor can help you for a small fee now to relieve the pain, and reschedule you for another visit tomorrow to sort you out entirely. Or, you can have a seat and wait in the lobby for 4 hours while we have the proper drugs and tools shipped from another location."
So you have the choice to take relief now, and come back later to solve your toothache entirely, for two payments, or wait in agony for 4 hours before the solution is available and make one payment of a roughly equal amount.
Think any sane person would just take the relief and come back the next day.
(Only in this case it's GPUs, and you'd be waiting roughly 150 days.)
Wait for it. Until either group comes out with a better card for the money, saving what you have for that next gen GPU is totally worth it. BTY: If AMD can cram 8GB of RAM in a single card, then go with team red. Although with this being said. staying at 1080p isn't the best option because of 4k becoming more and more popular. Im not saying upgrade to a 4K monitor, im just saying that if you do go with AMD, be aware that 8GB of on board RAM it totally overkill.
Video editing can eat VRAM for breakfast...
Edit: I want to feel dumb now.
@shaneybrainy13
4GB Card to run something in max settings 1080p? A Fury will work but might be a little to much. Something like the 290/390 will work but playing the waiting game until Polaris or Pascal come out is the best option for now.
