So I went on a 3 week trip and I come back and my PC won't output any signal whatsoever to my monitor but it will turn on. I have tried resseting the CMOS, and I have also tried a different monitor. I am using a VGA cord with a dvi adapter. I have a gigabyte r9 280.
Have you had your pc pluged in while you wherr away?
A couple of easy process-of-elimination diagnostics:
Confirm that the 280 is spinning up when the machine powers on--dead card?
Use a different output on the card/different cable--port/cable problem?
If you have integrated graphics on your cpu, disconnect the card and attempt to use the ig--card problem?
Analog cables have some fiddly components, and you're doing some nontrivial adapting, so I personally would focus my troubleshooting around the cable first.
This is the most likely cause. Leaving electronic devices plugged in can cause a static build up preventing boot. If you disconnect the power and hold the power button down for 10-20 seconds it should allow this static to dissipate. Once done, plug back in and attempt to boot. This can also happen to monitors so try that after if this fails.
That, and during that time there also can be an spike or some other issue with the power. That can damaged an component (most likely the PSU). but @shoring_fragments is also an good point to start.
Has happened, updated mobo BIOS with USB stick and problem solved for good.
