Hey guys, my first post, but not new to the forum..
i originally posted this in the gpu section of the forum but so far have only had one response, which is nice,but i'd love to know what more of you guys think.
I'm looking to upgrade my r9 280x at some point in the next few months. Power consumption isn't a worry, I'd just like the quietest and best performing card I can afford (around £300).
I've narrowed it down to 4 options and I'd like to know what you guys think would be the best option;
1.) GTX 970 prices are dropping quick, shall I get one? (My favourite option, despite the 3.5gb shenanigans)
2.) R9 290x? (again, prices are dropping quick)
3.) Get another r9 280x? These are now unbelievably cheap bang for buck wise and I wondered if buying another would be worth it, most likely not but I'm open to the idea (I have the space and capable psu)
4.) The last option is to wait for the new AMD options, I know it will be a long wait but would it be worth it?
Whatever you do will be a great choice. The double 280x would probably have the best performance for games using crossfire. But at the cost of power, sound and cooling. If you think those things are important then get the GTX 970. Whereas the 290x would be inbetween the two. But wating always pays of in the long run if you can manage.
just a little torn here. i love my 970 but since you already have a 280x then that would help performance as well. then again, new gpus should be coming soon from AMD as well. oh the struggle. all in all, i would vote to wait and see what comes out from AMD. then if they just keep shoving the power into the cards, you could decided either second 280x or 970. but who knows, maybe they will have some great power efficiency break through (although i am doubtful)
the 280x and the 290x require the same PSU. I'd go for either a 970 or the 290X depending on price. 290x is close to a 780 but two 280x's should be able to beat it out arount 1080p, anything higher/more monitors the 290x wiill win out. Don't get a 280x, it's old architecture.
edit: I was able to snag a 780 Ti for $340 after selling copy Borderlands pre-sequel that came with it for $40. Then sold my 280x for $140. Not a bad upgrade for $200 considering it will only power a 1080p tv.
