GPU Temp way to high

Hey,

I recently got a new case with much more ventalation. I also got a new motherboard. It is an ASRock z77 extreme 3, and I got a new PSU. The PSU is a Turbolink 500w. While attempting to play any game that is semi tasking, my GPU (GeForce GTX 660 3gb) exceeds temperatures up to 65 degrees celcius. Most of the time the game will crash and I get a notification saying that my graphics driver crashed and recovered. But sometimes,my monitors will show a random solid color, and  my whole PC will lock up.

I recently installed EVGA precision and set my GPU fan speeds to max speed. This keeps the GPU below 60 but I'm still concerned.

Could this be the new Power supply?

Any help is appreciated,

CG Impulse

if you can try using a better psu, the heat of the gpu isnt reallly a concern untill you reach around 70c. maybe not enough power?

Not enough power would make it run hotter?

The temp also did reach 70c without the fan running at max speed.

My question is would it be worth it to get a new Power Supply>

is everything up to date? bios, drivers,

That is a tier 5 power supply which is not recomended. Get a better brand like Corsair, Silverstone, or Seasonic.  Here is a list of psu's and their quality. http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx

Also 450w is the minimum for that card. You should probably get one in the 600-800w range.

I have a Corsair HX 750 and it is problem free. I am running a MSI GTX 680 4GB.

Everythings up to date.

I guess at the moment, I'll have run the fans at full speed until I can buy a nice PSU. I think I'll drop around $100 on a Corsair.

Thanks for the help/input!

I'd go for either this 550W Gold power supply from Seasonic:

or this 650W Gold power supply from Seasonic:

assuming they're still on sale for $95 and $120 when you're about to buy.

Also your overheating GPU may just be a bad video card, you may want to consider getting it RMA'd.  I have the 2GB GTX 660 myself and I've never seen it go above 61 celcius on only 70% fan speed.  Mine is the EVGA model.

maybe your new case doesnt have as much ventilation for your gpu as you persume, could be any number of things.

My GPU worked fine before I got the new PSU and case. Now it seems to overheat in a matter of minutes.

My new case has more ventalation.

I dont know what your worrying about GPU's get hot 60c-70c is a cool gpu and running in its correct thermal limits (if your gpu has blower fan design these get even hotter and loud!)

You can try adding better fans to your case to lower it a little

Well, the problem is that my games are crashing.

I get a message saying the driver stopped working but has recovered.

From the research I've done today, it has led me to believe that it is the heat of my GPU. Do you think it could be caused by anything else? This has only been a problem since the change in my power supply, motherboard and case.

Well i am gessing you just got a new case with a load of fans in it ...more fans dosent make the case cooler

For instance if you have 3 intake fans and a small exhaust fan all your doing is blowing hot air around the case ..try lowering the intake fans and speeding up your exhaust fan to keep the airflow cool and passing through the case instead of blowing stale air around the case

Well, I just made an odd set up to test whether or not it is the PSU. I hooked up the previously working PSU to only the GPU. And I have the new PSU running the rest of the PC. I have 2 fans on, and the cover off of the PC. I am going to test while playing Neverwinter (the game that it is crashing the most) nad see if it can last more than the usual 5 minutes and I'll monitor the temp and post the results.

Wish me luck.

Side note: with the old PSU, it is idling at 35c. Previously it was about 50! Things are already looking up!

yeah, psu is one of those things you shoulnt cheap out on

Just looked up that psu your useing and its a very poor one its less than 70% Efficiency and uses dual 12v rails send that suker back and buy at least a 80+ bronze corsair  make reasonablely cheap 80+ single rail psu's.

or if you have a little xtra to spend get a seasonic/antec/xfx or silverstone psu

That psu is giveing nowhere near 500ws of power and will more thanlikely damage your computer

Well, I've been running Neverwinter for about 25 minutes and there have been absolutely no problems.

I guess I'll be running it like this until i can buy a nice $100 PSU

You dont need to spend that much (anless you whant to)

Fractal Design FD-PSU-IN2B-650W  $70

Corsair CX600 $66

SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze $85

Silverstone ST60F-ES $65

XFX P1-550S-XXB9 $63
