Gpu passthrough on Z87 haswell

I have the following selection of components:
intel core i7 4770
Asus Sabertooth Z87
16GB ram
Gigabyte windforce GTX 780
(and a spare Gigabyte H81M-D2V which oddly enough shows a VT-d option in the bios with the 4770 in it).

is the motherboard good for gpu passthrough or should I abandon hope and wait to have money for a ryzen system?
I can post the output of the iommu groups if needed but the machine is currently off.
if it is a good motherboard then should I try using fedora or ubuntu or what distro and which guide should I follow since there have been two guides posted here?

thank you for any input in advance

just try it. if your IOMMU groups are garbage just use the ACS patch

I can’t run the iommu script. besides that, which distro should I use and which tutorial should I follow?

Archlinux is probably the best, even has a precompiled ACS patched kernel in the repos if you need it. Just use the archwiki, look up “PCI passthrough via OVMF”

If you don’t want to fiddle with setup but still want to use arch, install antergos and follow the archwiki instructions.

alright then. I thought fedora was better for it since on the latest tutorial fedora was used instead of arch that was in the previous one

You can do it fine on almost any distro, Arch just has the best documentation on how to do it in one place (the Archwiki.)

I do find the arch wiki really useful even though I use fedora and kubuntu mostly

It’s even more useful if you use the system it’s written for.

Try antergos.

downloading the iso right now

I also recommend checking out

reddit.com/r/vfio and joining their discord. They’re incredibly helpful on there.

I check it periodically and I’m subscribed to it. don’t have their discord though

link is in the subreddit description iirc.

People will give you live support

Update: it works!! confirmed actually working properly
