Okay, I'm mining feathercoins on sgminer with my XFX 7950, and my fan speed is confusing me. I have it set to 100% fan speed and at all times, however, right when the card hits 80C the fan starts dropping rpm.. I have set it to only use 100% fan speed in msi afterburner, sgminer, cgminer, and speedfan and it always does the exact same thing so please someone help me find out why my gpu fan is dropping rpm at 80C
It could be that the gpu is throttling its clock speed, therefor won't be out putting as much heat, therefor dropping fan speeds. I'd check your gpu clock when that starts happening.
The Temps are rising when the fans drop though, like it'll be at 79C and running 3200rpm and right when it touches 80C the fans drop to 2400rpm and then the temps get up to 85C before the fans get back up to 3200rpm, and the gpu core clock and memory clock arent shifting at all
The card may be changing power setting which have their own fan speeds and such. You could dump the card's bios, modify it to your liking (with a tool) and reflash it.
I have a modified bios and it doesn't have any settings that would make the fan change at 80C
What about on boot settings and such though?
I don't have the card myself so I may be wrong
Boot settings as in motherboard bios?
Are you using Radeon BIOS Editor (RBE)?
I used VBE7
Yeah sorry I didn't realise RBE doesn't support past the 6000 series :S and VBE7 doesn't seem to have the feature
No problem, and yeah.. Im super confused on whats making it do this
How are you controlling fan speeds, software or through the cards bios?
software; primarily MSI Afterburner, however, i've tried changing settings in msi, sgminer, and speedfan but same results.
80c is too hot for a 7950 ( not uncommon for the xfx 7950/7970 to cook themselfs ) i'd be cleaning up and adding new thermal paste to the card first.
/\ + 1 - might be a good idea, clean the dust off while your at it.
I think you can change the fan speed from within catalyst control center, If I'm correct you should try there as well.
I just applied thermal paste a few weeks ago cause i like to do that often, and i found the problem.. kind of. I went through all my fans and realize my lower cpu fan (closest to gpu) was sputtering and awful so i took it out and the gpu temps dropped to 77C, I dont really understand why this would happen from a bad cpu fan but since the gpu isn't hitting that magical 80C the fan problems have stopped
EDIT: Nevermind, It's definitely still doing it, so i tried flashing the BIOS to a different one and it's doing it to an even worse degree, the fan profile seems to just go on by itself without listening to what i put in to any of the software programs
If you're at your wits end with it - just mod a cable (fan ext, molex, whatever) with an end (eg. female) to connect to the gpu's fans. That way its 12v all the time.
I know nothing about modding wires and it still seems my gpu fan drops every time the cards heat raises by 5-6C, my temp hysteresis is 0C and it was working fine a few weeks ago so I'm very confused.. And it shouldn't be a psu problem because it's 850W psu and everything else is working perfectly fine
connect the fans to another power supply. maybe monitor the volts? my theory is that when it hits 80c it has to push harder (more volts) to maintain the GPU speed. so ends up taking some power from the fans?
I don't have another psu to try it with, however, I'll try unplugging everything but essentials so it uses less power and see if that helps, and I'm also going to try and plug it into a different PCI-e slot when I get home from school
