GPU bottleneck question

Would a card like this be bottlenecked by my Intel QX6700 @2.66GHz?

The more GHz, the better ;) But I don't think you will encounter a huge bottleneck.

I think it would be bottlenecked quite a bit, that's an old processor

Maybe a small bottleneck. But if you're at high res it should be fine.

Hi Matt :)

There would probably be a small bottleneck, enough to make a noticeable difference.

I play games at 1920x1080 if anyone needed to know. Does anyone have a recommendation for a GPU with my current CPU? Thanks for all the replies :)

Which motherboard do you use? Maybe old PCI-Express slots could bottleneck it. I don't think your cpu will noticeably bottleneck this card in most games.

I have the ASUS P5K Deluxe/WiFi-AP

You have an old motherboard and an old cpu, they will probably bottleneck that card a bit.

my advice:

1. buy a cheap gtx 550 or something. You could play every game nicely but you wont be able to play every game on high settings.

2. save up, all equipment is going to die sooner or later. Just save money for a new motheroard, ddr3 ram, new cpu and a new gpu. This way you will be good for the next 3-5 years.

Hey Sten how does the GTX 550 compare to my current GPU?

Get at least hd6870 or that gtx 560 the gtx 550 is only about 20% faster then your gtx260.

Patrick did you read all of the posts?

I've had the 560Ti with a Sandybridge setup and from my experience, the difference moving from Sandy (PCI-e 2.0) to AM3 (PCI-e 1.0) was somewhat noticeable (@1680x1050 resolution), i.e. it felt more responsive. I can't say for sure if it was the PCI-e lane throttling performance or if it was the CPU (IPS?) itself. According to TH your QX6700 is on par with my old X3 440,

So, my experiences may relate to your situation.. If you want to refresh your system, I'd suggest an i3-2100 (Sandybridge) coupled with a cheap H67 board for the system base ;) That's only if you have cash to spare

Edit: It's good that you've given your gaming resolution, for GPU recommendations, it also depends on what type of games you play. Are you into the Bethesda catalogue (DX9)? Civ 5 (CPU intensive)? Cawl of Dooty 10?

yes i did read all of the post.

Oh you have a GTX260, I thought your gpu broke or something. You could get the GTX560 for a little more speed in some games, but you should be able to play most games fine with your GTX260. With the GTX560 you will have a bit of a bottleneck tho. Patrick is right, don't get the GTX550, too little increase in performance.

If I were you, I'd wait for the new Nvidia card to be released and then buy a new mobo, ddr3 ram, cpu and gpu. But to be honest, you don't really need an upgrade yet.

Maverick I am into Bethesda games but I do like to play Age of Empires III every now and then even though I suck at it. Patrick I only asked that because it seemed like you just came in and posted a comment but thanks for your help. And Sten I was trying to avoid the whole get a new mobo, cpu, and ram thing at the moment. How do you think S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat would run on my current rig?

Windows 7 64-bit

6gb of ddr2 pc-6400

Intel QX6700 @2.66GHz

Evga GTX 260 Core 216 896mb Superclocked Edition

Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Sound Card

I am really interested in playing this game. I finished most of my other games. What do you guys think?

The only way to know for sure is to run the game. Do you have a copy of Pripyat? I'm sure it'll run on your system, you may have to scale down on your settings once in game. Run FRAPS with it and tweak the settings until you get ~30fps

I don't have the game yet. I really don't want to have to turn too many settings down :(

I have a Gtx 260 and an intel Q9650 @3.00GHz and I can run Pripyat pretty well on all max settings. There may be some slow down in places but that doesnt really bother me. I'd just say get the game its quite cheep and I find in this game the story and gameplay are a lot more important than the graphics.
