Correct me if im wrong,
I thought these were pretty cool only paid £15 for the joblot and these were just a small part of what i got
Anything 3dfx is worth something. Some of their cards carry five figure price tags to the right people. And you may think it's useless, but that card has Windows 7 drivers.
I shit you not. You can install it alongside any 2D capable GPU with VGA, run the VGA interconnect and render 3D with just the VooDoo 2 in Win7. So long as you're willing to deal with the nightmare of configuring the drivers in the first place.
noway thats crazy, are these people just collectors of old tech? yeah i think im gonna stick with my 970 as tempting as messing around with drivers to get weaker results sounds haha
Yes. And of a company that ruled for a short 4 years and completely upended the 3D graphics market in that time frame. 3dfx cards range from uncommon to downright legendary, and due to the history of the company and the nostalgia from fans their name will always bring a premium price. Ironic, since their goal was to make 3D cheap and available.
Also you can put those two VooDoo 2s in SLI, because they invented that.
Vintage PC collecting is HUGE compared to what it was in th 90's. Check out what an IBM PC of 286 costs on ebay. There is an entire section for vintage computer stuff. People will even pay for punchcards, some have collections that are insane (mainframes). It really is a fun hobby.
interesting post. After this one and the thread a few weeks back on old tech I had to go and dig around the spares box in the garage to see what I had:
There is a Voodoo 2 that was last used to play Half-life and the original Operation Flashpoint at 800x600. A 128Mb Geforce 3 (AGP 8x) and a somewhat recent (well, 5 years or so) Xonar DX. The other cards are SCSI, I know one was last used for a scanner about 12 years ago and the other I think I got to build a NAS box that just never happened.
1x VooDoo 5 5500 2x VooDoo 2 1000 8MB 2x VooDoo 2 1000 12MB 3x VooDoo 3 3500 1x VooDoo 1 4MB 1x VooDoo 4 4500 16MB 1x VooDoo 3 3000 And way off to the right is one of the first 2D/3D combo cards, an Intergraph "Intense 3D VooDoo" VooDoo 1 + Alliance AT-24.
And a couple more.
For some reason I don't have a proper detailed picture of JUST the older cards in the collection.
You want to check with the guys on Amibay about your Voodoo 5 5500. If it is compatible with the Amiga PowerPC systems someone will likely pay good money for it. One went on ebay for €275 not that long ago!
I have two at this point, one in repair (heatsinks were removed when I found it, and needs a new 3v capacitor in the VRM) and the one in those pictures. I haven't considered selling the original since, as you can probably see, I'm a bit of a collector.
I'm planning to sell the second one as soon as I get the fans hooked up and the capacitor replaced.
