Google to restructure into new company, 'Alphabet'

Google will stay as Google, but it will become a subsidiary of the new parent company.

"I should add that we are not intending for this to be a big consumer brand with related products—the whole point is that Alphabet companies should have independence and develop their own brands." - Larry Page

say what?

Fucking nonsense. Brin, Schmidt, and Page have gone on another acid trip.

I thought you were trolling, this is not something I expected to happen at all. Only time will tell how this will turn out...

I would be willing to put money on it turning out badly.

Google's #1 asset is it's brand awareness. At least in the US, and from what I understand in most other western/1st world countries, a massive preponderance of the public are aware of Google and their products.

This move? That goes in the circular file. They're divorcing their future products from the Google name. Fucking dumb.

For an example, what little momentum Google+ has or had? Google name.

So, the next thing that comes from Brin, Schmidt, Page & co. that might have revolutionized something, like gmail with free web-based email, or Google Search with websearch? I expect it'll fade into oblivion.

Google is still a thing. This parent company isn't going to be a big brand, it just allows them to separate all of their investments. Stop naming everything Google something.

That's entirely my point, not naming the things "Google Something" basically trashes their biggest advantage.

I think that everything web-based that they will do will stay as Google in terms of Google interests... It's confusing how they state it, but I think that ChromeOS and Chromebooks and all that are vested self-interests will stay, but all acquired companies and their hardware and research sectors will be owned by Alphabet rather than Google. That's because they are not as much a part of the main services Google provides, while Google Chrome and the relevant hardware all tap directly into the Google services.

i.e. We may see Google Fiber owned by Alphabet and get a changed name, but it's still separate from Alphabet because Alphabet won't do any sort of service or product themselves. i.e. Alphabet is turning into a country.

I think your definition of "country" needs work, friend.

I wonder what kind of stinky crap that they pulled that they feel the need to try and put some legal distance on.

Someone should have patented the alphabet!

This. Legal maneuvering. That's all this is. Can't wait to hear about whatever horrendous shit they've got themselves into.

Alright explanation.

Alphabet? Now there's irony if I ever saw it.

The parent company will use seasame street to represent itself. Alphabet, the Elmo company.

I think that Google missed a golden opportunity here to give itself a more sensible name, such as THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON. Tell me the following revised products and services lineup isn't easier for consumers to understand:

THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Search
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Maps
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Chrome
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Play Music All Access (okay maybe not this one)
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON AdSense
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Earth
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Docs
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Drive
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Now (my favorite)
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Calendar
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON+
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Hangouts
THE FRIGGIN' EYE OF SAURON Translate
