From the article: “Between April and June, Google completed a major revision of its search engine that sharply curtails public access to Internet web sites that operate independently of the corporate and state-controlled media. Since the implementation of the changes, many left wing, anti-war and progressive web sites have experienced a sharp fall in traffic generated by Google searches. The World Socialist Web Site has seen, within just one month, a 70 percent drop in traffic from Google.”
…
“Framed as a mere change to technical procedures, Gomes’s statement legitimizes Internet censorship as a necessary response to “the phenomenon of ‘fake news,’ where content on the web has contributed to the spread of blatantly misleading, low quality, offensive or downright false information.”
The “phenomenon of ‘fake news’” is, itself, the principal “fake news” story of 2017. In its origins and propagation, it has all the well-known characteristics of what used to be called CIA “misinformation” campaigns, aimed at discrediting left-wing opponents of state and corporate interests.
Significantly, Gomes does not provide any clear definition, let alone concrete examples, of any of these loaded terms (“fake news,” “blatantly misleading,” “low quality, “offensive,” and “down right false information.”)”

Off to DuckDuckGo everyone!

What does this have to do with google?
Google needs to be busted up, CIA needs to be “broken into a thousand pieces” to quote JFK
I use DDG and have for a couple years. But somewhere I read they are owned by google…[ I have no source]
Eh no its not…
Meh… not likely…
DuckduckGo is literally just a reskinned google portal.
Run a Yacy Node or a container/VPS with searx if you actually want neutral, logless search.
searx on a vps is a pretty decent idea ran it on a home server and then realized they still get my IP.
Really need a co-lo for the stuff I want to do.
Yacy is an interesting option too:
Searx is just an aggregator so would be more relavent than yacy results but I would still use ddg.
Yacy looks interesting as its a distributed system.
Pffft cmon guys we know what we should be switching to.
I guess Google’s “convictions” end where money begins.
Though I’d be interested if they hit right wing news outlets, since they are trying to reduce traffic to websites that aren’t, well, state sponsored or well established.
Also why hasn’t CNN been hit?!
Side note, while a bit scummy and definitely not a gud thing. It’s time you anti war, gullible, and irresponsible commies quit being complacent. It’s already foolish enough to just use the biggest search engine in the world under the assumption that they’ll be unbiased and give you what you want. I moved from Google long ago because of this crap that has been happening for years! Nothing new, but hopefully people stop feeding the beast and actually do something for a change.
My main worry is that this makes it harder for regular people to run across reporting from sites like this one.
Well considering we are very tech oriented, I doubt we’ll be buried, since our /pol/ is a rarity
