Google launched website where you can experiment with google's AI, currently it has few experiments with source code and you can even make your own and submit it. There's already an which scans an object and produces raps!
AI is an overstatement.
If real artificial intelligence would come to existence, the very first thing the compute nodes of the AI would do, is start communicating in their own language they developed themselves.
The starting point of every form of real intelligence, is to make a proprietary system to make something intelligible, so that learning becomes possible within the specificities of the newborn intelligence.
AI that just uses human language is nothing but a drone, it's not real artificial intelligence.
The problem is that if AI would come to existence at one point in time, humans would not be able to understand it any more, and it would be too late to limit the negative effects of it for humanity.
AI is the proper term for non-algorithmic machine learning approaches (i.e you don't design the model yourself but learn it from data) amongst the scientific community. What you are referring to is known as a "Strong AI" or "Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)".
