Good DVR recording software for windows 7?

I have a TV Tuner in my computer and was wondering if anyone knew of any good (free and/or paid) software for recording TV shows on Windows?  I like Windows Media Center but hate the proprietary format they record in.

For security? Id recommend MythTV and StarDotDvr

I have a USB tv tuner and just use VLC, however, it can not change channels, only record and view.

Model of the Tv Tuner would be nice , what you mean you cant change chanels so what are you watching?

Do they sell a tv tuner that is able to use HDMI from the cable box?

Because i have fios and the box doesn't have a cable out only HDMI out.
