Im looking for a good chromebook to turn into a ubuntu-box. everything i found about this is a bit out of date.
Any chromebook should do. Just make sure that is has a x86 processor and 4gb of ram. trust me you'll thank me later. if you dont want to completely replace chrome os, just use crouton.
I have run Ubuntu on two different Chromebooks. And like Dje4321 said its better if you don't go with an ARM system. Some have 4GB of RAM, and some have intel i3's in them. I had a great experience with the Pentium and 4GB of RAM. My only warning to you is from time to time Google will push out an update that breaks your Ubuntu system. And you have to reinstall. So just be careful.
i was hoping on getting something with upgradeable storage. i don't know how i would search for that tho .
I know that the Acer c720 has upgrade able storage. But I personally run a Chromebook Pixel for college and have no issues with it's 64 Gbs of storage.
Oh and I also stumbled across this video. Seems like this HP Chromebook has up gradable storage and RAM
I have the first HP 14 Chromebook, I know theirs a new version now. It runs Fedora well, and I installed coreboot on it with little hassle. Make sure whatever you choose that you can upgrade the hdd or ssd., Chromebooks don't usually come with a lot of space.
Don't get a chromebook. Get a decent laptop with better specs and a bigger screen and use that instead. Chromebooks are so annoying to get functioning with linux.
Yup take his advice... otherwise you have to mess with DRI in crouton which is retarded
If you're planning to run stock Ubuntu rather than crouton, anything super old that does not have an option to boot a traditional BIOS should be avoided. I think the Acer C720 era or newer should be fine.
Anything older is an absolute pain to get running on anything but the Chrome OS kernel, which is still Linux, but is compiled without some features like NFS and KVM that you may want.
you could compile a custom kernel from chromium os with the features you need.
not sure what would work. chromebooks aren't designed for the need of local storage.
