So, I have been running GNU/Linux Mint 18 on my Alienware 17 R3 for a while now. And in this past year I have never managed to get audio through the headphone jack. The built-in speakers work just fine, as do the built-in mics. However, plugging in headphones neither mutes the speakers, nor provides audio out through the headphones! I have tried messing with the basic sound settings, but without luck. Also, if this is of any help, the laptop speakers only work if I have the built-in audio output option selected, not the digital output option.
Nothing shows up in pavucontrol either?
What does your asound.conf look like?
Nope! With or without headphones plugged in, this is all that's available:
I didn't have ALSA installed... but I did install it, and nothing has changed. Nothing's wrong with asound.conf. as far as I can tell!
The headphone port is fine too, because it works on my Windows partition.
This seems to be about when the speaker audio-channel does go mute when headphones are plugged in. In my case it does not! Nothing happens whatsoever when I plug a headphone in.
open up a terminal and type in alsamixer
see if the headphones option has a MM on it.
