GNU/Linux gets support for built in firmware updates (including uefi)

Redhat have been working with a number of companies to support UEFI and other firmware updates in GNU/Linux distributions.

So today it was announced that one of the partners in this is Dell who will be supporting linux firmware updates though this service for some of their upcoming hardware.

I’m finally able to talk about one of the large vendors who have been trialing the LVFS service for the last few months. Dell have been uploading embargoed UEFI firmware files with metadata for a while, testing the process and the workflow ready for upcoming new models. Mario (Dell) and myself (Red Hat) have been working on fixing all the issues that pop up on real hardware and making the web service both secure and easy to use.

They (dell) are also looking for feedback on what users would like to see supported so take the survey I think it will be useful http://goo.gl/forms/1xOfCmsIaV

This is built into the latest GNOME and Fedora 23 has been making use of this with Fedora 24 planning to make some of the process automated (notifying you of available updates). Its not limited to fedora or gnome though and can work on any distro.

More manufactures are behind this but are apparently not ready to talk.

Mkay mkay.

Dell is slowly chipping away at better linux support. That is good to see.

i'm not surpirsed that DELL stepped forward first. In many markets DELL sells Ubuntu pre-installed on machines.
