interestingly it only shows my 950 Evo and 970 Evo on one of the PCIe4 slots and not the 990Pro on the 1st PCIe 5 Slot o.o

If there are questions i can answer them as soon as my GPU arrived and i got my VFIO up and running again (:

//EDIT1 added F10c
//EDIT2 added F11a/c - now from Fedora38 live USB
(i ran every UEFI from F8 upwards but did not make a lspci check every time sorry)
//EDIT3 added F12a (did not test F11)

Any changes to these groups after BIOS updates?
Have you passed through any of the M.2 disks? If yes, which slot?

i haven’t done the F9 and F10a upgrade yet.
Will do as soon as the 7800x3d arrives and post them here (:

Yes i have passed an NVMe though. Even tried to bind it to pci-vfio which apparently is not necessary.
The passed through one is in the 2nd slot counting from top.
Or the first one behind the GPU / Big heat spreader.

updated with Version F10c

Thanks for this post. Anyone have an thoughts on how well this would probably do with this configuration?

  • Linux host (productivity + dev + gaming)
    AMD Ryzen 9 7900X
    Fairly high resolution monitor - 5120 x 1440
    NVidia 1080
    64GB
    1 M.2 drive

  • Win guest (only when deperately needed for a few games…)
    2560 x 1440 resolution will be fine
32GB (of the 64 total) allocated
    –Passthrough devices:
RX 6800 XT (Allegedly the reset bug is not in force for this GPU. This is total overkill for me but avoiding the reset bug is a big deal.)
    1 M.2 drive
1 NIC via PCIe or USB (maybe optional)

No USB other than maybe a network device since I want to try a Looking Glass setup which if I understand how that works correctly, will essentially eliminate the need for a physical KVM switch. (I guess I’m also assuming I can use host device paravirtualized audio.)

…After just checking the manual I guess there is a possible issue:

That big a$$ RX GPU is going to be bottlenecked pretty bad with the x4 isn’t it. Was hoping for at least x8. I suppose I could swap the GPUs since I care more about Linux anyway but I’m not sure I want to fight NVidia’s intentionally broken passthrough resistance.

For me, Dual PCIEx8 is required to do vfio build. This board doesn’t do that. Pass.

Actually it looks like NONE of Gigabyte’s high end AM5 boards can do dual x8. Wow… that sucks. Narrows down the options I guess.

I assume PCIe 4.0 vs 3.0 doesn’t make enough of a difference for the x4 to be useful.

Asrock has some boards doing cpu pciex16 + pciex4. Those ones also could be good.
Asrock B650M-HDV/M.2, this one is severely underrated.

That one has the same problem right? x4 on the 2nd slot. I am looking at “MPG X670E Carbon Wifi”, but I guess we’re off-topic now.

That one, asrock b650m-hdv/m.2, both x16 and x4 (x16 physically) are from cpu. That guarantees they will be its own iommu group, which is the key to passthrough device to vm.
PCI-E slots from chipset usually share iommu group with other devices under the chipset.

Oh I see. But probably better to have two x8 (x16 physical) slots connected to CPU, right?

Yea.
But it is pretty cheap, yet not bad on features.

I’ll probably need to pay up for what I want here. That’s fine, although going north of $500 I definitely want to make sure it’ll work out. $150 boards heck I probably have a few of those gathering dust in the corner somewhere. lol

I own 2 carbons, which tells you how much I like that board. I posted the iommu in the forum before. You should be able to search that.

I’ve been looking at it. lol
Trying to determine if it meets with my requirements above.

Difficulty seems to be determining if I can passthrough one of the M.2 while still booting from another M.2 drive. The NIC I guess is attached to chipset so that’s a no-go but I think I can just plug in one of those USB network devices and run off that for the VM. I wish there was some way of knowing which of those devices was tied to what physical slot. Even the PCIe slots leave a bit of doubt for me.

that is a little weird post if you don’t addthe pcie gen to your claims…
most of the Am5 Boards which by 8 have split their Gen5
so you don’t have any Gen5 by 16.
The reason is that most GPUs cant even saturate Gen4 by 16.
Also its only a bandwidth problem.
So depending on your Throughput i dont see a problem

@louhy What i don’t get is why you want a AM5 setup with 2 GPUs?
I have everything running on the IDG which is in every AM5 cpu i know of.

I use the dGPU for gaming and if i want to start a VM with the dGPU i bind it to VFIO-PCI. ( i was told your dGPU needs to reset for this trick).

Anyways why 2 dGPUs?

PS: if you have a dGPU which has the reset bug and you exclusively have it bound to VFIO-PCI you can bypass the reset bug with attaching the bios rom of the GPU

//EDIT1:

exactly what i do

Yeah I was wondering about how the PCIe generation stuff factors in there. Are you saying that an AM5 board would do fine with a new-ish GPU in an x4 slot?

Reasoning:

  • Passthrough of an IGD is “very difficult” (so I’ve read), so although it might work fine for a WIn VM, it’d probably be better to use with the host, however…
  • I’m not sure integrated graphics will do the job of primary host/Linux GPU. It has to drive an utrawide monitor divided into 3 monitors at 5120 x 1440. Also I have a hardware KVM that I use to switch to a “work” machine, that can be tricky with odd HDMI/DP out combinations. I don’t think most builtin graphics even have 3 video out ports. (The host and guest here are both non-work purposes with an entirely separate box for work stuff. Confused yet? :face_with_spiral_eyes:)
  • I’m on Linux for pretty much everything, gaming included. It just seems weird to have dGPU for the VM rarely used, but not have a dGPU for the primary, even if integrated GPU did work for the host… Actually it feels kinda wrong even giving the VM a better GPU, Windows doesn’t deserve it… (ok this is a silly reason but I stand by it, lol)

I guess I have some pretty hard to fill requirements in that dept.

the problem with pcie lanes and generations is that you have them on both ends.
a Gen5 by 4 has the same bandwidth as a gen 4by 8 or a gen3 by 16 since bandwidth (afaik) doubles per generation. If you GPU only has Gen3 by 16 and you put it into a Gen5 by 16 its still running Gen3 by 16 no matter the board.

Regarding your requirements. I have nearly the same. I rund 1440p Ultrawide@160Hz 4k@120Hz and a small FullHD@60Hz.

I use the IDG for the Host / Linux.

The sole reason to pay such an overpriced amount of money for a main board was because i wanted Gigabyte and it was the only Gigabyte board with 3 Display outs at that time. (:

If you game on linux you can just use your dGPU to render and your IDG will just display the rendered frame (same as Laptops do).

For example i can just right click Firefox and chose run with dGPU.

Also the IDGs of the Ryzen 7000 Series are the stronges on the current consumer world.
Just google a little here (:

Dont forget you dont need the IDG to do much exept put out a picture. Your limit is the Bandwith of your Display outs (same as with PCIe) there are multiple factors like Resolution in combination with Hz which need to go though HDMI (diffrent generations have diffrent limits)

The Gigabyte has a DP 2.1 an HDMI 2.1 and a USB-C DPalt mode (i think it was 1.4 but i am not sure - i use 8k60 capable adapters and cables for everything).

DP 2.1 should handle your 5120x1440 pretty ez if you dont go overboard with your refreshrate like 240HZ or so … in that case you would have to use compression anyway no matter the system.

so tl:dr:
from my perspective i dont see a reason why using this board with 1 dGPU (which you can switch to host if your VM is offline) should not fit your needs.

  • and its much simpler than putting multiple gpus in a system.

Yea, depends on what you are doing.
For me, I need 2nd pci-e slot from cpu to correctly passthrough 10gb nic with SRIOV.
