I am planning on buying the Gigabyte TRX50 Aero D and would like to use linux operating e.g (manjaro). I have been hesistant to buy it as I do not know if all the components etc will work. If there is any driver incompatibility.
Is there anything that will not work which you are aware of I need to be aware before purchasing the motherboard?
IMHO 99% it should work… but there is a 1% risk that it MAY not…
Best places to look at for any H/w related info are linux-hardware.org and ubuntu.com/certified
Bottom line you pretty much have to accept some risk else upgrade to a workstation or enterprise grade motherboard…
How about using an IPMI card to allow for OS-agnostic management of the motherboard ?
Will that work ?
I have researched the Asus IMPI card for a X670 Creator motherboard build I am considering under LIinux and that would work.
I would prefer to use the Gigabyte TRX50 board as well.
And thus I was wondering if any problems could be mitigated by using an IPMI card on the Gigabyte board.
I went to Gigabyte’s Enterprise website
but could not find such a card there.
I emailed Gigabyte support and they stated they cannot guarantee any compatibility with Linux.
Linux doesn’t suffer from any large hardware incompatibilities anymore, and Threadripper is well-supported. Also with Linux the drivers are baked right into the kernel, no need to download anything.
avoid this motherboard with Linux at all costs - a continuous fight between bios and Linux over thermal management has made the experience a nightmare. So far unsolved… meh
can you expand on that? I have rev 1.1 of the board and I just updated from 2023 bios w/7980x to the “c” beta bios from a couple weeks ago and have found things to be much improved from what they were.
what sort of cooling? I’m assuming its cpu thermal management? Im using a tower cooler right now and I think I attached the fan to the pump header because even at max rpm the fan im using isnt very loud. im not overclocking though (if I were I’d probably use an aio like the silverstone 360 with the giant threadripper coldplate)
