Hey bros and Brodettes!
Today I got my hands on my soon to be main server! I’m planning to use proxmox to virtualize a few of my bare metal machines like a Truenas server and a pfsense router.
I’ll probably use some sort of a spacer to allow some Ethernet cables to pass through between the fan at the back of the server. That’s right I was planning to use one of the dual GPU spaces for some more NICs!
Then the weird toggle switch hit me. The server cover says that the switch chooses between onboard LAN and a mezzanine card. I was under the impression that the dual port mellanox was the mezzanine card!
I installed A HBA for an external disk shelf and one Intel X540 and that makes the regular pci-e slots filled.
Does the OCP-switch disable the onboard LAN or not? I could just get some spf+ to copper adapters to get all the nics needed for my networking needs!!
The manual on the other hand suggests that I should turn the switch off in order to get my two U.2 drives to work (I got two Samsung 1.92tb nvme 4.0 drives for my VM’s…
So long story short. I assume that there are people here with the same server that I got today. How should that switch be set to get the front panel U.2 slots to work and if they’re enabled, does that disable the dual port onboard sfp mellanox?
I can’t actually test anything out quite yet because I didn’t realize that the PSU’s in that thing require some heavy duty C19 power cables! I had to order some in 'cause of my remote location…
