Getting the most quality sound in the smallest possible file size

I have a lot of WAV files I convert to mp3 for a mobile app, the app is just over the size limit and I need to shave off a few megabytes. The audio is a candidate, I'd like to learn how to get the most audio I can into the smallest size without sacrificing too much quality.

I am looking for a guide that I could use to learn some tricks to get the files size down even further.
Hope someone here is a audio expert that could point me to the right resource...

AAC sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. Assuming you're converting to CBR 320kbps MP3, you could probably get away with VBR 256kbps AAC.

Don't convert lossy to lossy though, you'll lose a lot. Convert the WAV files.
