Georgia is putting a Tax on Electric Cars

If I didn't already need another reason to leave Georgia I just got one:

What's the deal?
Short version
- $5000 tax credit for getting an electric car is now gone
- Now have to pay $200 assessment fee a year/ This is a tax

What is this supposed to do?
Help the crumbling in structure of Georgia. I'm not going to deny our highways and roads are in need of repair but aren't there better ways to raise money.

How do I feel about this?
Georgia roads are a mess. I also want to get an electric car one day. I do not like the idea of paying an annual fee for driving an electric car. The people that are in charge of the Georgia State Government just make me shake my head. I don't care about getting a tax credit for an electric car but at the same time Georgia is still giving tax credit for me using energy efficient items so this seems like a double standard in a way.

What do you guys think about this?
Should electric cars have an annual fee?

If you choose to buy an electric car you are no longer paying the exhortation gas taxes. The government knows that and is going to get their taxes one way or another.

To answer your question I don't think they should have a straight fee for electric vehicles. As bad as the gas tax is, it still buts a larger tax burden on vehicles that are generally larger and harder on the roads. I realize 30+ mpg in my 20 year old prelude and don't drive that far to work. My neighbor has a late model full size truck that realizes 10 mpg and drives over an hour to get to work. Should we pay the same amount of vehicle tax?

Straight fee is ridiculous for the electric cars. They could charge more for charging at the public charge stations.
