General Questions about my Build

Hello people, I was wondering if any of you could look over my build (very first one) and tell me if anything is wrong with it or not. (Compatibility issues, missing essential parts like a proper cooling fan etc.)

I was also wondering, since my CPU is a Intel Pentium G3258, does it really need OC'ing to be able to run games in 30+frames or is just leaving it just as it is a good idea also. Also the PC part checker says that :

  • Some Intel H81 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs.
  • The G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory operating voltage of 1.6V exceeds the Intel Haswell Refresh CPU recommended maximum of 1.5V+5% (1.575V). This memory module may run at a reduced clock rate to meet the 1.5V voltage recommendation, or may require running at a voltage greater than the Intel recommended maximum.

Will the memory hurt my build? Or is that something that is a slight nuisance but will not affect my overall performance.

Do I really need another CPU Cooler or will the stock one from the G3258 work?

Sorry for the questions, I just want to finalize everything and get information from as much reliable and helpful sources as I can so my first build can go as smooth as possible.

Thanks for all support

  1. The bios will almost likely need to be updated .... "flashed"
  2. I most always recommend better than stock cooling ... especially if planning to OC
  3. The raidmax PSU is not recommended (low quality)
  4. you can get an R9 280 GPU cheaper than that 270X
  5. and the ram you selected may underclock to meet the 1.5v Haswell refresh specs

would recommend this for $498 much better future proof and upgradeable mobo and does not need flashed.(you could upgrade to an i5 or i7 very easily in the future)  Faster GPU and ram that meets Haswell refresh specs. And much more dependable PSU.

the Corsair Spec 1 case poses a problem with tall heatsink CPU coolers ... making it more expensive to get a decent cooler

so I would recommend this

Thank you very much!

Hey, Mr. Ratzzz I didnt get the chance to ask you this before but, if I dont OC my processor, would I still need a separate cooler? And would you think I could play games fairly well without OC?

If you are not overclocking, you don't need an aftermarket cooler.

The G3258 exists for overclocking.  Two cores won't get you far in gaming nowadays unless they are both super fast.  Pick up an i3 at least.

^^ what STN said ... he is still the reigning Master Builder

Alright, thank you! I am considering to move to i5 or i3 processor instead of G3258 but I dont know if those will have any issues with my other parts (Motherboard, Video Card, Psu etc etc) Time for more research!!

you can drop an i3 or i5 or i7 on that system and be good

I disagree with you, I've built 3 systems around the G3258 chips and they are doing just fine for almost all games nowadays. The only problems I've ran into is BF4 specifically, other than that the games I've played have had no issue whatsoever with the G3258. Also, I've installed that chip into an H97, H81, and Z87 chipset boards and I didn't have to flash the bios to get it to work out the gate. However, if you're looking to get the most out of the chip (overclocking especially) you will need to flash the newest bios.

Also, two of those systems I've overclocked with the stock CPU cooler. One on the H81 chipset board was at 4.3Ghz running at 72 degrees under load, and the other H97 chipset board at 4.2Ghz at 70 degrees under load. You do not need an aftermarket cooler to overclock a G3258 to a decent clock speed. You will need one only if you go up over 4.4Ghz, then it starts to become a heat problem. The last one I overclocked with a water cooler (Corsair H55 because I had it laying around) and was able to get 4.6Ghz keeping it at 46 degrees under load.

The G3258 indeed can be overclocked with the stock cooler since its two cores don't output as much heat.  It's a good chip, but with games becoming more and more optimized for multiple threads, I would rather have an i3 over an overclocked G3258.  However, it still rings true that most games are GPU-bound.

Did you use BCLK to overclock on the H81 and H97 boards?

Mobo i s is a primary component  ... do not skimp on primary parts .. they are the basis of the rig ... save money and buy better stuff and you will not regret the decision.

my advice is to to save money up and buy quality parts ... then you will not regret cutting corners
