General question: can you update bios without there being a cpu?

As the title says.

If I get my hands on a motherboard but a more modern CPU that requires a BIOS update, and I don’t have an older CPU of the same architecture lying around… can I just put that bios on a usb stick and connect graphics?

Or am I going to have to get an older CPU first? And install an os or something like that?

Depends on the main board. If it has the Flash-back option, you may be able to flash the BIOS w/o a CPU. If not, source a suitable CPU (just get the cheapest for the socket you’re using).

The only way would be to use the built in BIOS flash-back feature using a USB drive if the motherboard supports it. Look up the manufacturers step-by-step instructions and follow them exactly. If something is taking too long, wait longer. Also I have heard of ASUS brand mobos having occasional issues with the flash-back feature, or at least more than the other brands that offer it.

If flash-back is not a feature, you would have to install an older CPU that the motherboards default BIOS supports, update BIOS, then install the new CPU.

Getting a older CPU is an easy option as for me. You can resell it later.
Also, you can try to solder flash chip with bios, but you will need chip that already has new bios and equipment for soldering.
