Garuda Linux temporarily freezes and hangs

I’ve been having some really weird issues with my installation of Garuda Linux. I reinstalled it recently, and since then, it’s been basically unusable. It constantly freezes and hangs, especially during things like large steam downloads. I’ve checked dmesg and journalctrl, but nothing really comes up.

I’ve tried both disabling and enabling swap, with no change. You can see the behavior here. https://i.imgur.com/SbveYfN.jpg

it runs great for a little while, then it hangs, and slows to an absolute crawl. Then it all picks back up again. And slows to a crawl. And so the cycle repeats.

If anyone has any ideas, let me know!

Is it a laptop? Do you have adequate cooling and power? Have you updated your bios?

I have a ThinkPad E480 that runs at 400mhz for 10-15 minutes if you power it up when the battery is empty.

It’s a desktop. 3900x with a 240mm custom loop.

That’s not the problem, unfortunately.

Sounds peculiar.

  • Is your bios up to date?
  • Boot a Windows PE and see if it has similar behavior
  • Run memtest86+
  • Do an extended smart test on all your installed drives
  • Check your PSU. Power delivery issues can cause weird symptoms.

The easiest way to test a PSU is just to try with one you know works

More elaborate tests include:

  • Check motherboard with a lower power CPU
  • Check CPU in another motherboard
