I am picking up a laptop for work/school/gaming. I have $750 to spend and have decided on the MSI GP Series GP70 Leopard-490 does anyone have a better recommendation or is this a good choice? It also has a $100 rebate right now so I plan on buying it this weekend. Thanks!
Update: The ASUS K501LX-NB52 looks like a much better bang for my buck, without the rebate.
Just make sure the gpu in it has gddr5 and not ddr3, there is a major performance difference between the two.
I didn't see GPU ram type listed on either of these. I will try to find that, thanks.
Edit: Found it, these both use ddr3. I can't find anything in my price range that uses gddr5, I may have to settle with the ASUS.
Depends... DDR5 is based on DDR3 with some architectural changes. It has much higher bandwidth, for example a typical CPU using DDR3 will have around 100-150GBps whereas a GTX 970 has 225GBps of memory throughput. The new HBM in the FuryX has over 500GBps, but i'm not using it in this comparison, because it's not really the same as GDDR5.
Anyways, as we see GDDR has way higher throughput.. But at the cost of latency. It's certainly not noticeable, but there is a significant delay when using GDDR.
So what i'm saying here is that if it's lower end GDDR it might not be any better than DDR at all.

look for the new Carrizo APU laptops. they are supposed to be in your price range
just to clarify are you talking about 750USD? i recently picked up a acer nitro v15 for 1.7NZXD and have to say im pretty impressed. It might sound way more expensive but if you are in the states it will be way cheaper.
yeah, USD. Nice laptop but $950 USD is the best price i can find on it.
Ah, all good. best of luck mate
