FX6100 vs i5

Hello, Mr. Logan! In this budget gaming video, you chose the FX6100 for its 6 cores. In another video, you said that you would rather have 4 true cores instead of 2 that were hyperthreaded (I'm paraphrasing, I can't remember exactly). Apparently, the FX6100 is actually a CMT CPU with three cores, each with two little cores. How does this compare to a good ol' i5 in terms of gaming performance?

Note: I realize that this video might be a little outdated, I don't know. We need a new $600 rig video! :D

FX-6300 is a good budget CPU for gaming regardless of the amount of cores and their trueness. i5 is definitely better because of its single-thread performance but if you are on a tight budget, difference between FX-6300 and i5 is small compared to big difference in performance that you will get if you get a better GPU for the money that you saved on CPU.

A 6100 is a good multitasker and it games okay . It doesnt compare to the i5 its not even close to the same cpu class? I would not have any problems putting a 6100 in any office computer or really in any gaming computer with a 7750 ,7770, 7790 ,7850 with a oc .

My cousin has a FX-6300 & 7950, same CPU just higher clock speed, and he averages about 100fps on BF3 ultra @1080p.

Now days it would the I think the 6350 or 6300 you'd be getting not the 6100. However, for a budget build and a cpu around $130, the cost of the 6350 and i3 3220 according to newegg, they are the way to go I'd say. They may not be as strong core per core as the i series, but on a budget build for the same price as a dual core i3 you can get a 6 thread 6350.

In some games, that use <4 threads, the i3 will pull a head at stock, but you can throw in a CM 212 evo and overclock the 6350 and it should beat the i3 in single threaded apps if I recall correctly and in multithreaded it will stomp the i3. If you can afford an i5 go for it, but if not and you are in the $130-ish market get teh fx 6300 or 6350 and spend the savings on a better gpu.

Awesome. Nice tips.

What about a Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition? Better than the 6300 or 8350? I do plan on overclocking slightly.

I think I've decided on the 8350 unless anyone wants to dissuade me. I've paired it with the HIS 7870 GPU that Logan seems to recommend all the time.

Thats not a bad setup but since i have the same thing, i recommend going with a 7950 or 7970 if possible . Newegg has a sale on the HIS 7870 179 Dollars right now

FX6100 = phenom ii x4 965 ive had both chips the phenom beat the FX6100 nine times out of ten.

You shude be looking at FX8350 vs i5 (if your gameing the fx8350 is going to be more future ready with its 8 cores)
