Hey guys, I got a couple of questions in regards to purchasing the FX-9370.
1. My processor right now uses 125W, but the 9370 is 220W. Would I need to get a new power supply? I think if I needed to get a new psu, I would rather just get the 8370 or something which is 125W.
2. I want to get this processor primarily for DayZ. I'm getting a terrible frame rate for the game. Would the 9370 show any improvements? Or would it still run like shit regardless?
3. Is it generally a good upgrade worth $180-$200 up from the 6200, or not so?
Anyway, as for the 9370, I probably wouldn't want to put it on a 600w PSU even though you'd likely be fine. What mobo do you have? It's important to have a motherboard with very good power delivery for the FX 9000 series.
I can't really go for an intel right now. I got this system and swapped out the 7570 for a 770. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=5331402&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
I think I made a mistake buying a pre built pc and then deciding to upgrade it later, but my parents wouldn't let me build my own since they didn't trust me. I don't think a motherboard with an intel chipset could fit in there.
According to the motherboard specs it doesn't even claim to support the 9000 series. Although it's possible it would. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03353629&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en#N132
Anyway, it's a 970 chipset, so I don't think the power phase will be good for a 9000 series regardless.
600W is plenty of PSU power. Don't worry about that. 220W is TDP not necessarily how much power it draws.
You will need a new motherboard. it is iffy running any 8 core on a 97p chipset board and the 9000 series drink the power so a good power system is necessary.
my advice, realy save some more money and switch to intel. even an locked i5 will perform way better in arma then a FX9590.
If you think about it, for a FX8 core cpu, you will need a decent mobo and cooling to run it. this will basicly be more expensive, then just a i5-4570 or 4670 with a cheap B or H series mobo.
1) Upgrade your motherboard and CPU to almost any Haswell based CPU to get better performance in day-Z - But you would need to find a micro-ATX motherboard if you wanted to keep the same case.
2) Just upgrade your CPU, you will get improved performance in Day-Z, it just won't be as good as running it on an i5. The HP website says an FX-8350 is supported but doesn't list any other more recent FX chips.
I have not played Day-Z but used to get decent performance out of ARMA games on an FX-8320 clocked to 4GHz minimum so an FX-8350 should be a worthwhile upgrade. If you were planning to push the CPU to its limits for extended periods e.g. rendering, I would worry about the motherboard. Playing games won't really do this so it should be ok. You could also check with HP about support for the FX-4350 and FX-6350 both of which are on newer architecture and higher clockspeeds than your FX-6200.
Just be aware that the engine ARMA series, Day-Z and Take-On-Helicopters uses runs much better on Intel. You can get high FPS on an AMD FX8xxx but have to compromise on detail settings - like turning the draw distance down.
Forget the FX9xxx series your 970 motherboard won't handle them. Intel really isn't necessary either, the cost of switching over isn't worth it. On the cheap you could switch to the FX6300 as it IS better than the FX6200(FX6300 piledriver vs older FX6200 bulldozer), the FX6300 also carries better single core performance than the FX 8 cores since it has 8mb L3 cache with 6 cores vs 8mb L3 cache with 8 cores. The FX6300 also overclocks to 4.1ghz - 4.2ghz easily, if you have a decent cooler your 970 board should be able to get at least 4.4ghz out of it which is plenty for any game. If you want more power get a FX8320 and overclock it to at least 4.2ghz.
I run my [email protected] on stock voltage with a Power Color 270X DEVIL and a Qnix 27" 1440p monitor. I play games like Metro, COD AW, BF4, Far Cry 3, War Thunder, and Bio Shock at nearly max settings and the FX8320 isn't even breaking a sweat. My [email protected] was the same way.
