FX 8320 over heating issue :-(

Hey Community,

I am having an issue with my sons computer.  He has a fx 8320 on an asus mb, with a Zalman CNPS5X cooler, and I can't seem to keep the temps down.  It runs fine in regular computing, but if we crank up Battlefield 4, DayZ, or any taxing game and the temps shoot through the roof and it ends up having to shut down...  My question is what cooler at a decent price would fix the issue... it is really hard to keep it cool when the room is probably about 80 degrees.....no A/C..  so the ambient temperature in the room is really hot... or should I do AIO water cooling???  I thought the cooler I bought would have done the job, but maybe I should have forked up a lot more cash..LOL... Thanks for any info you can give me...

Oh, and its not in a desk or anything like that, it is well ventilated and has 3 230mm fans in a Thor V2 case from Newegg...

Yeah that cooler is a bit low end for the job. Though things just might enough if you tweak the CPU settings a litte, like turning off the turbo/boost function if there's a setting for that in the BIOS.

A relatively simple cooler like the CM Hyper 212 EVO would be a lot better. Unless you also want to overclock there's no need for anything very costly.

+1 on hyper 212

Would a all in one water cooling solution be better? or just a much better air cooler... We are not overclocking anything...

Thanks for all the help

the CM 212 EVO is a much better cooler than the Zalman and it's inexpensive ... should do you fine

or if you feel the need to spend money the Noctua dh14 is on sale and it will cool almost anything ... stay away from cheap AIO coolers.

In all honesty I have seen the CPU handle 60+ just fine however a water cooler even the base line 120mm rad will do even with the fan off. Also it is a pretty good undervolter, if your son doesnt over clock how about tanking your voltage. Take it down to 3.6 ghz @ ~1.2 volts/1200mV.. That will lower your temps significantly and the 32nm CPU should be able to handle it easy. Mileage may vary if you cant get to 1.2 go to 1.25 but below 1.30V.. good luck

The cooler you bought is sufficient enough to cool your cpu. I'm assuming you're not overclocking as it was not mentioned but before you spend any money try reapplying thermal paste and reseating the cooler. The cooler you bought is better than stock so it should have no issue.

+1 on Hyper 212 Evo Cooler. IT's fantastic for the price.
Just a note to be careful of, because I have seen this issue more time than i can count. DO NOT over apply your thermal paste, it can have the opposite effect from what you are going for. A small dot of paste about the size of a pea or a grain of rice dead center is plenty. IF this does not apply to you then ignore it. But like i said i have seen this mistake more times than i can count.

@TheOpticalDude by shut down you mean sudden blue screen right?

Yeah, so I ended up purchasing a Phanteks 140mm twin tower for 75.00 off of newegg and all the temps no matter how hard we hit the cpu stays at 29c.....so yeah this things rocks now!!!! Thank you all for all the help!!!
