Soooo I bought the FX-4170 for my new build I've been hearing alot of bad things about it for some reason but also some good things Will I regret buying this cpu ? Should i have bought the Phenom II 965?
Hmm, depends, if your gonna really push an OC out of it then it may have been worth it. How much did you pay for it? It would have been better to go for the Piledriver chips but the FX-4300 is still over priced in my opinion. If you paid like ~$80 for it then I wouldn't concern yourself too much, put a decent cheap cooler (CM TX3 would work find ~$14) and OC it up to 4.3GHz ish.
EDIT: Forgot the base clock of that thing, maybe you could aim for 4.6GHz or something?
The FX series wasn't bad, just overhyped and overpriced at the time of launch. Though, they were power hungry, and the 8 core ones were only as fast as a Phenom X6.
If you got it for $110 below, it isn't a bad deal IMO. Since it's already clocked high, you can easily push it( if you don't mind the bills). Get a decent cooler, like the one Cloud suggested or a CM Hyper 212
Ok thanks guys ill buy a cooler and def OC it
Honestly, the phenom architecture is better. Also, the FX-4170, to my knowledge, is NOT a true quad. Look at the specs. The L2 cache is 2x X kbs. The phenoms are 4x 512 kb.
If you overclock the FX 4170, there shouldn't be a difference in games, but in video editing, and applications that utilize multiple cores, the 965 or 955 would beAT THE 4170.
In other words, you may regret it if you do more then just gaming. If you're purely gaming, you will know no regret.
when i built my rig i really didn't pay close attention to CPU i just went with the newest thing from AMD and so far am not very impressed my FX8150 OCed to 4.35 still kinda slow unless am rendering . my I7 at 3.6 felt smoother
dude, there is alot more to a processor than just the number of cache, it's also about the amount, and the clock speed. the 4170 will beat out the phenoms any day. amd put plenty of cache in thir modules....
Yeah, not to mention that multi-threading on an FX is amazing.
lol
intel: here, we make your program think we have twice as many cores.... still only a quad core...
amd: hmmm.... hyperthreading... fuck that shit, let's just put 8 real cores on with a shitton of cache and be done with it.
now, if only amd could fix their per-core performance... especially cache latency
