Future upgrade possibilities?

Hello!

I was wondering about possible upgrades in the future, to be specific: about MoBo and CPU.

I just built a desktop PC earlier this year with an i3-4130/R7 260X/H87 mobo and it runs everything I need it to run without any downsides but since I was on a tight budget I was considering upgrading it in the near future.

With all the talk about AMD offering more bang for the buck I'm now considering switching to an FX (the rumored Zen models) in the future (since the current FX-series with the AM3/AM3+ sockets is pretty old).

The upgrade is not urgent as my current rig runs everything I need right now, but I was wondering what would be more beneficial as an upgrade, so here are the scenarios I considered:

  • waiting for the last 1150 (87-compatible) Intel CPUs and grab an i5 non-K (something like the current i5-4460)
  • switching to the new AMD FX-series as soon as they come out (FX-CPU + mobo)
  • don't worrying about it right now and coming back for advice when I'm actually about to upgrade

I'm open and glad for any suggestions and possibilities I might not have thought about.

Since I'm kinda new to the whole "build your own PC" thing I really would appreciate some advice from someone who knows more about it than I do.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I completely forgot about DDR4 since the prices are too high and 2011-3 is the only supported socket right now.

Kind of a bummer, though, that I won't be able to re-use my DDR3 RAM when I upgrade :-/

Just use your old gear for a NAS or HTPC when you upgrade.

That's a nice idea, I would be lying if I said I haven't thought about it, but that would mean I have to get more than just a new MoBo, CPU and RAM. Also, my current MoBo is ATX (that butchered ASRock ATX-size) and I wanted to move to a smaller size, especially for an HTPC.

Damn, it seems like once you start building and maintaining a PC system it will never be finished...
