Fusion drives are not so Sci-Fi any longer

Its really not when fusion drives can reach terawatts of power man but yes I think its a typo… mW not MW

Irrespective of how much Fusion can make, at that efficiency, the 35 megawatt power station that powered the entire small town (hosting the largest gold mine in the southern hemisphere) i worked in and surrounds could only produce 175n which would be only enough to accelerate 175kg at 1m/s-2 (if my calculations are right)?

So yeah, surely it’s milliwatts :smiley:

Actually it may have been 35MW per turbine and there were 3 of them for redundancy, but you get the point :smiley:

Ion drives in use today have very low thrust, but high propellant efficiency. These numbers are in line with that.

From wikipedia:

Ion thrusters in operational use have an input power need of 1–7 kW, […] thrust 25–250 millinewtons.

Kilowatt per millinewton is the same order of magnitude as megawatt per newton.
