Go with Pop OS, and get yourself a nVidia card. That is what I would do.
Pop OS, has a version with the proprietary Nvidia drives pre-installed.
Elementary OS drives me nuts, with all the things that you can’t do with the interface.

OK.
Ubuntu has mac themes that i can download(i love how MacOS looks SO much more than windows). 1080p is fine for me i have 2 1080p displays tho one is 144hz, looking at quite a few benchmarks most games that i care to play run just fine on Linux. And from what i see there was some kind of update that made WoW run really well.
Also, already ordered the RX 5700xt, at this point no reason to go nvidia, the 5700xt competes with the 2070 and sometimes 2070super for about 100-150 dollars less, got my phat OC version for 60 dollars off(360)
And i’m fine with a learning curve, if i wasnt i wouldnt even consider Linux as my daily driver, i’m young, i got time to learn LOL.
this is the GPU i ordered
I believe that is the best 5700xt to get other than the sapphire one. Nice choice.
Not to be a dick, but we will see about that.
I hope it works out for you. I have tried it many times, but after trying Pop Os, I just can’t got back to Elementary OS.
After tons of though i do think im gonna go Ubuntu, get use to it, learn linux, etc. and if i STILL want to, after a month of using it, go to elementary then i will.
-edit
After do research i doubt ill want to switch. BUT only time will tell
I remember you having problems previously. ubuntu 20.04 is now on kernel 5.4 which means it should have great compatibility assuming mesa is up to date.
Thats kind of the linux conundrum… new hardware takes a bit for support.
I wold recommend you go with Pop OS. As a somewhat rookie, Pop OS has worked out the best in my opinion.
I’ll def do some research on it! Still got until monday for ALL my parts to show up. Plenty of time to make a final decision.
As Adubs said, things have moved to 20.04 and with it, there is a new kernel with newer hardware support. So you should be covered with your new hardware.
Pop OS is also releasing 20.04. It’s should be today actually. So you should be covered there too, by the time you get your hardware.
Yeah that seems like a huge plus, just a lot of stuff to research. Id like my switch to be smooth and according you a few people(yourself included) PopOS or Ubuntu 100%… I’m just afraid of not liking it haha
Does PopOS have the Flathub/Flatpak thing? It seems easy to download Discord and stuff from there if the app store doesnt have it
I would avoid using flatpak where you can. If there is a native package in the repo, use that first.
pop is based on ubuntu so anything that is available for ubuntu should also work with pop.
I personally think, that if you are a Mac OS look/feel person, the choice between Ubuntu and Pop OS, would be Pop OS.
It do include it. But it was easy to install things like that before as well?
I wouldn’t use the app store too much honestly. If you want something to do to not go crazy about themes until monday, install a virtualbox and mess around with apt in the terminal. It’s super easy and you’ll never have to deal with GUI changes in app stores and stuff.
FYI
ubuntu uses the apt package management system, and is compatible with debian packages. this means that anything you can get in the form of a .deb
file is compatible with your system.
Discord has a .deb available on their site, as does most software with linux compatibility.
You would want to use native packages over flatpak for a couple reasons but thats probably a topic for another discussion.
.deb files are compatible on all ubuntu/debian based distros, including elementary, mint, and pop os. those three are all based on ubuntu.
Oh hype. Ill give the VM a look, ive used one before but it wasnt for very long at all only a few hours, was really slow. My current PC isnt great and does everything slow.
Maybe use it as a challenge. Terminal only.
“Linux - The roguelike of operating systems!”
I would say download and put linux on a thumb drive and run from that. You can boot most distros ‘live’ and run from the USB out of a ram disk. The only downside here is changes you make will not be saved. You can use a tool like YUMI to put many distros on one USB drive and try a few of them if you like.
I would do that… if i had a USB lol. I cannot find either of my USBs… borrowing one from my mom today, HOPING to find my 2 today, its a real pain.
Maybe you should order one with your parts. This is the preferred way to install linux these days anyway.
