Front panel jack lacks bass

Hey guys, don’t really know what to do anymore, so I come to you. I build this PC less than a month ago, everything working fine but audio, I discovered that if I use the back jack, it works normal, good sound quality, but when I’m using the front panel jack, I don’t get any bass. I tried my headphones (Samson SR850, pretty solid sound, plus I’ve used it with other PC’s or phones, so I know that’s not the problem) on the back jack and there’s a massive difference, front panel just doesn’t get any bass at all. I’ve been doing some research and it seems that I’m not the only one, but haven’t got any solution, no one seems to understand why this happens. I’m using Win 8.1, but I found that it’s not a matter of OS, cause other people with 7, Vista, and even 10, have the same issue. I don’t know what to do, it’s really frustrating, since one of the main uses I give to the PC has to do entirelly with sound. I’ve tried reinstalling Realtek HD Audio drivers, but nothing changed. Anyway, hope someone has any clue on how to fix this, or what’s the problem. This is my motherboard (Asrock H81M-VG4 R2.0) in case it helps, even though every person that had this problem, had a diffrent one.

Why don't you just use the back ports?

Have you checked your cables? Most likely the cabling from the mobo to front panel is trash, and is causing audio to come out bad.

I'm using the back port for a home theater, and it's a pain in the ass having to reach for the back of the case everytime I want to use my headphones, I don't have it by my side.

Yes, I actually just did it. It doesn't seem to be the problem, looks good.

What case are you using?

Sentey BX1 4246

Has the case been reused from a previous build or did you buy it when you say you built the pc, a month ago?

It's new, I bought everything for this new build.
Today, I was at a friend's house, he was using Win 8.1, everything worked correctly, but then he updated to Win 10 and after installing he started having the same problem as me. So I'm guessing it's not a hardware thing.

What type of Motherboard do you have?

Basically speaking - if your motherboard has an on-board audio card that may or may not be EF shielded/separated from electronic noise on the board, it ONLY supplies its audio processing to the back I/O ports.

However the front audio jack is supplied from another header on the motherboard which has it's sound produced by other drivers (I'm tired so I am super over simplifying, before some bites my head off)

Summary of that is back I/O audio ports has separate and dedicated processing and supply whereas the Front audio jack has its audio supplied from the rest of the chaos that is your normal MOBO bus.

This is of course dependant on your type of motherboard - if it even has the above mentioned feature. If it does not I would imagine the issue if more related to the port itself having interference.

Well there's your problem it's el cheapo, replace the jacks and cables, maybe just the cables will do though.

I'm not really sure, what do you I mean by type of motherboard? Maybe you would know better, it's an Asrock H81M-VG4 R2.0.

I won't say it's not, I don't really know. But the fact that a lot of the people that has this problem, gets it after changing OS, makes me think that it doesn't have to do with hardware. Plus, I know people with similar Sentey models, and they work fine.

if you thin it's the OS then have you tried adjusting EQ?

Your motherboard supports ◾5.1 CH HD Audio (Realtek ALC662 Audio Codec) so yes I would say that your problem is not one that can be "solved" it unfortunately is the nature of how these things are laid out/set up.

The easiest way I have of explaining it is that if you plug it in the back your headphones/speakers are getting direct support from the hardware. If you plug it into the front then your headphones/speakers are being supported through a peripheral (your case) then to the hardware.

Hopefully this makes sense to you and you are able to listen to good tunes :)

Yes, but it only gets worse.

have you tried plugging into the back? I know you have your other stuff plugged in back there but for the sake of diagnosis it would be helpful.

I get it, though I still have some hope that it will work fine after I update to Win 10, haha. Anyway, thanks, I gess I don't have a choice, I'll have to go to the back of the case everytime from now on, hahah.

Yes, I did! I plugged the same headphones to the back. Sound is great, as it should.

Then you answered your own question what's wrong.
