Hey @wendell, this video and me reviving my 2009 mac pro got me thinking.
The Mac Pro 5,1 isn’t supported by Catalina so there might be a wave of those being dropped on ebay over the next year or so. Mojave is still running though and with a few upgrades these things are still great servers. So how about this:
- any mac Pro 5,1 dual CPU version
- max out RAM to 96GB (could go 128 but would lose triple channel)
- throw in any polaris card to make it mojave ready
- also install 10Gb NIC and a PCIe drive for macOS
- stuff it with high capacity SATA HDDs (up to 6)
- setup ZFS on those
- use it for local macOS server things and time machine
