FreeNAS vs MyCloud

Hey everyone,

So I am interested in getting a good shared storage solution for my household. 3 people in my house will use it. Currently we are using Dropbox, and we just can't deal with it anymore and want something else.

So I have narrowed it down to 2 options.

1: Build my own, cheap computer and use FreeNAS and configure it myself. This is a tad expensive, and obviously it takes quite a bit of work to get it going. (Build the computer, set up the software etc)

2: The second option is to just get MyCloud the 3 TB variant for $!70 or so. It connects to your router through an Ethernet connection and it comes ready out of the box, and it's cheaper.

I'm new to doing storage like this, so I'd love to hear you opinions. Thanks guys. :D

Esentially the difference between the two is speed, expandability and features. If 3TB is enough space for you and you don't need high transfer speeds then something like the mycloud will work fine. With freenas you will be able to add more hard drives as you need them, you can have redundancy to reduce the risk of data loss, it will be a lot faster and there are lots of plugins for other services.

Alright, thanks for the help. I'll do a bit more research than make a decision.
