Allo everyone. I am trying to work on a new project on my media server. I would like to jump ship from Windows Server 2008 on my media server. Would it be possible to install FreeNAS on a 30GB WD IDE Drive I have hosting the os?
Yes, as long as the disk is larger than 2GB it can be installed on it.
However if you wish to also use the drive to store media, you will need to partition the drive. One large enough for the OS (2GB or larger) and another for Storage.
I do have 2 seperate 500GB hard drives for the storage, with I am planning on doing a ZFS RAID
FreeNAS wiki actually recommends that you install the OS on a USB drive. I have it one a 8GB. Be aware that whatever you decide to install it on, it will be used as OS only, there is no partitioning it. You cannot use the same drive for OS and storage.
Thus why I used a old WD IDE Drive, and my 2 500 gigs for storage. I didn't have any spare flash drives
