FreeNas Alternatives

Hi Logan, Wendell, Pistol, et al

Being a huge fan of UnRAID (especially the latest beta, with all the virtualization instead of plugins), I've been really eager to hear Wendell's opinion, but more broadly I'd like to hear all of your thoughts on FreeNas alternatives?

Also, have any of you had made much contribution to open source projects? I'd also like to hear your opinions on what you think the best approach is for those eager to contribute (especially those new to programming).

Thanks guys, I'll also add that your site and show are both great, keep up the good work.

NAS4Free is another BSD alternative to FreeNAS. It's no where as near full featured as FreeNAS, but can run on pretty old and underpowered hardware no problem. (Used to run it on an old PIII with 128MB of RAM no problem)

Yeah.  NAS4Free is good if you are working on an older machine.  I tried it briefly before switching back to samba.  Worked well enough.

Roll your own Centos/Debian machine with BTRFS witch has many of the same features as ZFS. Use SSH and/or Webmin to run it headless.
