A little research shows it was a fairly expensive MOBO 5 years ago. CPUs for it seem to be fairly expensive. Is it worth investing $ & time into for my purposes?
Get a couple of second hand Xeon X5500/5600 CPUs, some triple channel memory, and a couple of good coolers. Overclock the hell out of them, and you've got a really solid system.
Oh that is a treat right there. Establish a the cost of your project and make the decision of the maximum time it is going to take. Then make the decision on whether it is worth it or not. I wish you the best of luck!!
This was the last hurrah for unlocked Xeons. This board is killer, even today. I know people still run these as servers or for gaming simply because they were so expensive, powerful, and modular. I didn't think much about EVGA until they made this board. If you decide it's not your style, I'm sure someone (including myself) would give you some cash for it.
Such heresy calling the legendary SR-2 a server mobo :)
It was the best desktop pc motherboard ever when it was released. It broke oc world records. It was the thing to have in bajillion dollar builds.
X58 is the last platform with overclockable Xeon's. Find 2x e5690 and 4x 5870 or 4x 480. Put it in a unreasonably big full tower. Go crazy on cooling stuff.
