Framework (2nd Gen) Event wish list

Framework (2nd Gen) Event is live on February 25th

What are the wishes and expectations for future Framework products?

My wish list is:

  • Official 240w usb-c charger
  • New Framework 16 motherboard based on the AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D.
  • New Framework 16 expansion bay RDNA 4 GPU.
  • New Framework 13 motherboard based on AMD Ryzen AI ··· 395.

I’d take a Ryzen AI 9 … 395 motherboard for the 16" model as well.
I’d like an OLED screen option (though I’ve never seen a Framework screen, so they may be good enough already)
If possible, it would be great to have a battery expansion module for the 16.

personally?
i think that an intel arc gpu module for the fw16 would be sweet,

  • fw16 intel arc gpu
  • fit and finish improvements for fw16
  • framework to produce a usb c docking station that isnt god awful unlike most things on the market.
  • egpu (not for gaming, just something for productivity)

do i think any of those are coming? no. but i can hope

New keyboard layout options (pointing stick please)
Larger/deeper chassis and better cooling options for fw13.
Something weird and unexpected, like a battery pack expansion bay option for the FW16.

I think based on the marketing email they sent out that they have a 2:1 convertible option coming.

If Framework had an Oculink option I’d buy one immediately, but I know it’s not an easy thing to achieve with their hardware/setup.

Touchscreen! Don’t think I’ll ever spend the amount required for framework or any high end laptop until touchscreen is an option. Not sure why they’ve never added it as people have asked for years

I want a touchscreen/ active pen so bad I velcroed a drawing tablet to the back of my framework laptop. not kidding.

Something like the GPD pocket 4 is such a cool form factor to me, like I could totally run postmarketOS and replace my phone with it. Like make calls and stuff. Just use it as a smartphone AND a laptop basically.

oculink is crazy, whats the benefit over thunderbolt? I always hear about it on IRC

yeah touchscreen would be great. Like a 2-in-1

Can Ryzen even get Thunderbolt? I only use AMD CPUs.

i think it has usb4 which is similar?

If it’s the HX3D CPUs, I believe they’ll support ECC, which is not currently workable with the prior Framework models. Would be nice if the GPU supported ECC as well (or better, perhaps a toggle ala Nvidia 30/40 series) but I doubt that would happen.

My wish is for a Strix Halo main board option to for Framework 16. I’d give them pretty much whatever they wanted for that.

My expectation is a fair phone competitor. Smart phones are where the money is at, and I’m expecting them to go there.

Since they tout 2nd gen I’d bet on an updated 13 inch chassis (or perhaps 14 in the same footprint?), probably with a zen 5 motherboard. OLED option would be nice to have too.

I want to like framework but currently it’s premium pricing for a 2021-2022 level laptop… I’d be willing to pay a premium for the upgradeability but their current models are pretty outdated.

Maybe it’s possible to modify a Dual M.2 Adapter with oculink connectors.

the first part im all onboard with, a refreshed chassis would be interesting, maybe a slightly larger screen. I got the fw13 earlier this year, love it so far, so I can understand the desire for a slightly larger screen.

however, the statement about it being a 2021-2022 laptop is a bit unfair, even with the older display I opted for to cut cost (rather than the 2.8k 120hz diplay), it feels solid, and in terms of keyboard/trackpad feel i would fairly confidently say it is comparable to a 2013-2015 macbook pro (both models i have used but did not daily), and it exceeds the expectations set by my 2008 macbook pro that most other laptops failed to meet all these years later.

the processor, while not AMDs newest processor – is only about 18 months old, and the amd ai processors to my knowledge did not support upgradable memory in any formfactor, so until the 9000 series actually makes it to laptop, im not gonna ding framework too hard on that point.

the swappable i/o is also a lifesaver, do i use it frequently? no, but when i need it, boy am i sure glad to have it, so far as I am concerned, at least the fw13, was worth the “premium” pricing, and while not macbook levels of fit and finish, is certainly very solid.

all that said, i do hope that perhaps there is a rev2 of the fw16 to get some of those fit and finish issues resolved.

I’m hoping for:

  • more options for the F16 gpu
  • more options for the F16 mainboards
  • screen options for both sizes
  • potentially a pipeline for getting community developed products into the hands of people a bit more easily.

Well, none of the things I was hoping for were announced. even still, a ton of cool stuff going on.

The Framework Desktop is actually quite interesting to me because the slides and website show support for Ollama and EXO. I think I might buy three or four of them for an AI cluster. I will wait for performance benchmarks of course but at this price point it is close to the cheapest option to run a full sized LLM with (i)GPU support. The Radeon 8060S can use up to 96GB of the shared memory.

Can someone summarize? There’s quite a line to get onto their website atm :stuck_out_tongue:
