FYI to anyone who's just downloaded anything off Fosshub to run a scan check
Yeah I actually just mention that
ah sorry didn't see it :P
But now I'm getting conflicting information but it may or may not have already been resolved
well classic shell I think has been sorted out, not too sure about any other programs
fosshub is down which means they are handing it.
What do you guys think, would this be considered grey or black hat hacking?
Black Hat...It renders a machine usable with no straightforward way to fix if you are an average user and it targets users. I doubt the average joe knows how to fix the MBR. If you want to be an ethical hacker you never risk disrupting an ramdom innocent user´s everyday life. It does not really do any serious damage, but it is still damage..
Gray hats do sometimes just disrupt out of fun. Black hats do it for money and power.
Disrupting a random user out of fun is not a gray hat behaviour in my opinion. You may not be exploiting it for money but just to have fun on other people´s expense is still a selfish goal...You are not supposed to use your skills for any selfish goals, especially if what you are doing can cause harm (not matter how insignificant)..
Yeah i know, but people have a different way of seeing stuff as fun without knowing what effect it will have or even understand you mess with other people lives in a very bad way, but i just think if they wanted to do harm they would have done something nobody would discover.
Yeah sure...This does not change the fact that this might be harmful behaviour, even if they themselves did not realize. thus cannot be considered ethical hacking...
but no i wasn't saying they were white hats. definitly not. Still think they shouldn't have done it, but i can also see some fun in doing it.
White hats for sure not. As a white hat you are not doing anything illegal and without permission. But as long as it is harmful behaviour cannot be considered gray hats as well. Gray hacking is still revolving around ethical behaviour, just not always legal.
This is not harmless fun...It renders the OS unusable. If it was just a message ¨So have been infected¨ without any more damage then it would be harmless fun.
OK i did some research. Though Grey Hats used to be in-between. Apparently they aren't the chaotic neutral ones, i had in mind. Those are apparently all black hats.
but i think its still harmless. They could have done way more with this.
I feel like it was grey hat. They didn't steal data or do anything too drastic but they did show how easy it was to compromise FossHub. Fosshub will probably have better security as a result of this, if not shame on them.
Alright bub a gray hat is not a white hat. Nor is it a black hat. I've come from a more gray hat area in rootkitting and worm viruses. Some RK's are tools, others will format a computer all the way down to firmware. If something is a threat I can take care of it, whether or not its a normal person or not. Gray does not mean that the right thing is always done.
I know, but it depends what you read i think i did this morning/afternoon/midnight/i don't care and found some specific pages (like Wikipedia) suggesting he was right bout it, but i still think gray hat is indeed in the middle. I think its open for debate what the correct terms is these days, Maybe somebody with the right knowledge can write article on this forum about it.
Neither, it's just a basic blue hat hack. Happens all the time.
........Its GRAY. BETWEEN black and white.
Its labeled with colors for a reason. Think of a gray hat as a contractor, a white hat as a dink, and a black hat as an asshole. All three take their craft as important, but one's kind of an idgit and the other side isn't the person to fuck with. Unless they're 12, then its funny.
Gray is gray, not white, not purple. Gray. Its more like a job. Work comes from either side.
Thats it, no articles that said this or that, its as blunt as possible.
