Flickering Screen On My New Build

Hi everyone

I have just completed building my PC by GETTING an MSI GTX 980 and a 4K TV.
I tryed connecting via disportport, but only got a picture in bois and that was some weird double image, but no display in windows.
I wiped the os thinking it might of being a driver issue, but had no luck.
So I tryed another plan of attack and that was using HDMI 2.0, one bit of good news is now I am in windows desktop and its run at 3840 x 2160 @ 60 hz (YEAH), but then I saw flickering lines on the screen, so i thought it was a cheap cable I treated myself to a nice lead, but o course no luck the flickering is still there.
So my question is has anyone seen this before or got any insight.
This has been a long week for me searhing the internet for info and wiping my os and my pocket is getting lighter after buying three different cables.

So Please Please Help

Here are my PC specs

Motherboard - Gigabyte Z87X-OC
Processor - Intel 4770K (Overclocked @4.3)
Power supply - Antec High Current Gamer M 750w
Memory - G.Skill 16GB (2x8) @2400 MHz
SSD - OCZ Vertex 4 128GB
Hard Drives - 3x Seagate Barracuda 3 TB
Graphics Card - MSI GTX 980 4G
OS - Windows 8.1
Display - Panasonic Viera TX-65AX802B

Without any specific experience I will just voice some basics to check off against - that way we also know not to repeat suggestions :)

1)Graphics driver is the latest released
2)Your TV supports direct connection to the computer (a really odd thing to check I am sure you will think but there are stranger issues that can occur I assure you.)
3)Graphics properties that are being used from your computer are matching the TV specs (you are setting the screen resolution, refresh rate etc to match the TV - as it may be having an issue replicating the image)
4)Kick the TV (Do not really do this, but it may make you feel better :P)

Give those a try and if no love is found after that we can try some other things :)

1)Graphics driver are update (checked twice)
2)Don't sure what you mean
3)TV manual Says, HDMI (4K 60/50p with HDCP2.2), not sure what HDCP2.2 is, but i am at 4k 60hz, resolution 3840x2160, have also tryed droping the hz and @30 the screen starts jumping.
4)I came close

Many thanks for contacting me any help is great, sometime you can be to close to a problem to see the most simple of things

That is my general thought on problem solving - always remember to step back at times to re-evaluate the problem in case something simple is missed :)

There is definitely something wrong with the video signal transcoding from your computer (GPU) to the TV.

Take a look at this regarding your HDPC (High Definition Content Protection) https://www.digitalconnection.com/FAQ/HDTV_12.asp

Out of the article came my next suggestion - using a DVI cable to test connection and see if that clears up the image.

If that doesn't work then my original answer 2 may come into play - the TV's codecs/firmware may not be pairing nicely with your PC

I tryed the same HDMI port on the TV and graphics card, but dropped the resolution to 1080x1920 and they is no flickering and I also try it with DVI adpater with the same HDMI cable and no flickering, this was at 1080x1920 too.
Thanks for the link to the HDPC also I read somewhere the graphic card I have has HDPC, I belive they call it a handshake between two devices, I'm not sure if this is affecting the problem or not.
I also think you maybe on the right track that the TV is not read the information right, but still have no clue have to fix it, but we seen to be getting a little closer to the problem.

I have gone though the TV setting and changed some opitions to see if it made any difference and nothin, also I checked if they was a fireware update and I was up to date.

  • Does the screen flicker without pc connected ?? - if so rma the tv.
  • If not then its worth trying CRU (software for resolutions etc) - make a profile for 4k but have the refresh rate set to 50 or 55hz. There will be guides for CRU around.. its been awhile since I've used it myself. I think there are still some issues with gpu drivers + 4k + some devices.
  • The TV only flickers with the PC and only at 4k resolution, If I use the TV app store (ie Youtube or Netflix even at 4k the picture is perfect.
Thanks for the software for resolutions idea I will give it a try and fingers cross it works I will keep you up to date with any news.
    Thank you for your help.

I know you can not see me, but if you could I am on the floor bowing, it fixed.
I changed the hz to 57 instead of 60 and no more flickering.
Thank you so so much for all your help, my hair now has stopped falling out.
You don't know how much loss sleep over this I have had, again thank you Jeghost and thank you Deejeta.

    Many thanks Darrell
